Alarm about drug resistance in livestock farming
At a recent workshop on antibiotic control in livestock farming organized by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, experts presented alarming figures. Research results showed that up to 82% of livestock waste samples in some southern provinces carried antibiotic resistance genes.
More seriously, common pathogenic bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella isolated from meat, egg and milk products have shown resistance to many commonly used antibiotics. This situation not only reduces the effectiveness of disease treatment for livestock but also leaves antibiotic residues in food, posing a great risk to consumers' health and reducing the reputation of Vietnamese agricultural products in the international market.
Faced with this situation, scientists and businesses agree on the need for a change in strategy. Instead of abusing antibiotics, the livestock industry needs to switch to safer and more sustainable alternatives.
Enhance biosecurity: Improve sanitation and barn management practices to effectively prevent disease.
Use vaccines: Vaccinate pets to proactively prevent pathogens.
Use probiotics and biological products: Improve intestinal health and enhance the natural resistance of livestock.
Applying these methods not only helps control drug resistance but is also the key for Vietnam's livestock industry to develop sustainably, meeting the world's strict export standards.
