Although he is over 70 years old, Mr. Y Nguon - Head of the Lao Cai Province Traditional Arts Theatre Club still maintains a special love for traditional musical instruments. Originally a stage director, his passion has urged him to diligently explore, self-study and research techniques for playing many traditional musical instruments. Currently, he is not only proficient in the monochord but also plays the moon lute, the two-stringed fiddle and the flute. For him, traditional music has become a breath, an inseparable part of life.

Mr. Y Nguon said: Passion and enthusiasm have been in my blood since I was young. Many times when I can't speak, I use the guitar to speak for my friend.

To him, each musical instrument has its own soul, and to capture that soul, the artist needs patience and perseverance.

Playing musical instruments is a bit difficult because each instrument has its own technique, which is not the same. And to play successfully, you need to be persistent, continuous, and not get bored - Mr. Nguon confided.

Mr. Y Nguon is passionate about traditional musical instruments, especially the monochord.

From his passion for traditional musical instruments, in 2011, Mr. Y Nguon gathered people with similar interests to establish the Traditional Arts Theatre Club. With more than 30 members, mainly the elderly, the club is divided into four main groups including dance, drama, singing and music. Regularly 3 sessions per week, the club organizes activities to practice singing and musical instruments and stage new excerpts and stage plays.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh, Yen Ninh 2 residential group, Yen Bai ward is one of the first and most active members of the Club. Although she has turned 70, she still enthusiastically practices with everyone. Not only that, she also guides the members of the Club to practice each song and correct each dance. Despite her old age, her voice is still smooth and her movements are graceful.

Ms. Minh confided: Having participated in the Club's activities since its establishment, over ten years of association, I feel I have gained many things. Not only am I happy and healthy, but I also satisfy my passion and love my national culture more.

With over 15 years of continuous operation, the Club has become a common home for those who love traditional arts. Each practice session not only trains skills but also creates a warm space for them to preserve and spread the precious cultural values of the nation through the sound of instruments and songs.

As a lover of culture and arts, Mr. Tran Ngoc Kim, Yen Thinh 1 residential group, Van Phu ward, chose the moon lute as his friend.

He told Kim: The first time I met and came into contact with the moon lute, I immediately fell in love and was guided by some seniors like Mr. Nguon. I have been practicing and improving my skills for more than ten years now. Now, I can play many tunes. I find club activities very enjoyable, it is an indispensable part of my life.

Currently, the Club has about 4-5 people who know how to play traditional musical instruments. Members regularly practice, playing and singing, creating a diverse and colorful artistic space. Up to now, the Club has had hundreds of performances in and outside the province, serving cultural exchanges and local political tasks, bringing traditional music closer to the public.

Mr. Y Nguon, Chairman of the Club, shared: The Club was established to meet the aspirations of people who love culture and folk songs. I hope that the Club's activities will contribute to spreading cultural values and national spirit to the younger generation so that they can continue to preserve cultural identity.

Social networks, technology development and cultural exchange have put many traditional cultural features at risk of being lost. The establishment of clubs with similar interests and passions in Lao Cai such as the Traditional Arts Theatre Club has contributed to preserving and promoting the value of traditional musical instruments and folk songs, adding to the joyful sounds of new life.
