Hanoi has students with the highest scores at the Youth Math Olympiad, surpassing the US

The Vietnamese team achieved excellent results at the 2024 International Youth Mathematics Olympiad, including one student with the highest score at Key Stage 2 level.

The Youth Mathematical Olympiad is a prestigious mathematics competition. Many students who win prizes in this competition continue to participate and win prizes in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) at the high school level.

The questions for the Youth Math Olympiad are proposed by each country and selected by a panel of experienced international judges and three judges from the host country. In addition, 10-20% of the problems are set by the examination board, so they are very objective. At the Key Stage 2 level, grade 6 or younger, the questions consist of 15 written answers, with a duration of 90 minutes.

At Key Stage 3, Year 8 and below, the test consists of 12 written questions and 3 essay questions, lasting 120 minutes. The team test is a competition between small teams of 4 students each. They will work together to solve 10 problems in 70 minutes.

Vietnam started participating in the Youth Mathematics Olympiad in 2011. Students who were selected for the team had to go through two very strict domestic selection rounds with the best candidates, then trained for 6 weeks to adapt to the competitions.

This year, the International Junior Mathematics Olympiad was held in India (InIMC) with the participation of more than 600 excellent candidates from nearly 40 countries and territories around the world .

According to the results from the organizing committee, 16 out of 17 Vietnamese students participating in the competition won individual prizes, including 3 Gold Medals, 6 Silver Medals, 6 Bronze Medals and 1 Encouragement Prize. With this result, the Vietnamese team has excelled over many Mathematical powerhouses and is among the best teams among all participating countries with many strong opponents.

All 3 Gold Medals belonged to Hanoi students, including 2 Gold Medals from Newton Inter-level School students: Nguyen Dang Khanh - Key Stage 3 level and Nguyen Phong Chau - Key Stage 2 level; the remaining 1 Gold Medal belonged to Nguyen Duc Minh (Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted) - Key Stage 2 level.

In particular, with a score of 140/150, Nguyen Phong Chau - Newton Inter-level School became the student with the highest score at the entire Key Stage 2 level, surpassing the American and Chinese teams.

Besides the individual competition, InIMC has a team competition. The Vietnamese team won 2 Championship prizes, 1 First prize and 2 Second prizes in this category.
