(Dan Tri) - Two young Chinese men were administratively detained for allegedly urinating in a hot pot at the Haidilao restaurant in Shanghai.
A clip circulating on Weibo shows a young man standing on a table and acting as if he is urinating into a hot pot at a branch of the Haidilao hot pot chain. The video also features laughter from those present.
On March 6, the Haidilao hot pot restaurant chain spoke out about this video. The restaurant said they reported the incident to the authorities to track down the source of the video.
The clip caused controversy when it recorded a scene of a person acting as if he was urinating in a hot pot (Photo: Screenshot).
"Whether this action is staged or not, we will resolutely investigate and handle the responsibilities of those involved according to the law," Haidilao said.
The restaurant also called on the online community not to share the video to "maintain a clean cyberspace".
The account that uploaded the video has been banned for violating platform guidelines.
On March 8, Huangpu District Police (Shanghai, China) announced on Weibo that they received a report about a video recording a young man urinating in a hot pot. Through investigation, the police identified the two young men as Tang and Wu (both 17 years old).
According to police, the two young men and several others went to a private room at Haidilao to dine on the night of February 24. After getting drunk, Tang climbed onto the table and urinated in the hot pot. Wu recorded the video and posted it online.
"The police have applied administrative detention measures in accordance with the law," the announcement said.
A lawyer speaking to Chinese media said the video could be considered a public nuisance. If convicted, violators could be detained for five to 10 days.
However, the lawyer said that if the incident reached a certain level of spread, the punishment could be more severe.
This is not the first time Haidilao customers have run into legal trouble. According to Sina News , in March 2024, three men went to a Haidilao branch in Beijing and claimed they spat out a piece of glass while eating sesame sauce.
The group was later given a free meal and 2,500 yuan (about 9 million VND) in compensation from the restaurant. However, Haidilao reported the incident to the police.
After investigation, police discovered that this group had committed similar fraud at 5 Haidilao branches within 5 months, appropriating a total of more than 10,000 yuan (about 35 million VND).
The men were arrested by Beijing police on charges of extortion.
