Having registered their marriage, they will have a wedding party next month and joy comes early to the young teacher couple in Hoc Mon district (HCMC) when they both received the "Outstanding Young Teacher" award at the city level this year.

They are Ms. Truong Thi Hong Xuan (Duong Cong Khi Primary School) and Mr. Pham Nguyen Thanh Tung (Ly Chinh Thang Secondary School).

Meet at Green Summer

Mr. Tung studied mathematics education at Saigon University. Ms. Xuan studied primary education at the same school. In the summer of her first year, Ms. Xuan was the deputy team leader, while Mr. Tung was a member of the school's summer review team for the Green Summer campaign.

Teacher Tung said that on the first day he was assigned to teach the children, something came up and he asked the deputy team leader to be absent, but he was a bit worried because it was his first day on the job. The deputy team leader heard the reason for his absence and just agreed. However, the guy who was a year older fell for it after that time.

The female Youth Union officer also persuaded the senior student to join many volunteer activities afterwards. After graduating, Thanh Tung taught STEM for a year, waited for Hong Xuan to graduate, then both took the exam to become teachers in Xuan's hometown of 18 betel gardens in Hoc Mon.

Xuan accepted a job at Duong Cong Khi Primary School, where he had attended primary school. Meanwhile, Tung taught math at Ly Chinh Thang Secondary School, where Xuan had attended secondary school and was once the team leader. Both were secretaries of the school's teacher union, so it was easy for them to support each other in activities. Outside of teaching hours, both of their joys were Union activities.

Mr. Tung said that the two of them were together all the time when they were working together, and there was almost no boundary between work and family time. Because they had the same profession and shared the same passion for the Youth Union, they easily sympathized and helped each other complete their tasks. "Since we met, we have never argued. We always compensated each other and did not judge who was right or wrong, did not blame, but always sat down together to discuss and help each other overcome any problems," Mr. Tung shared the secret to keeping the fire of happiness of the couple who just received the award for Outstanding Young Teachers of Ho Chi Minh City. Continuing her husband's words, Ms. Xuan said the keywords for both of them were "respect, listening, understanding and sharing".

Teachers are like... superheroes

In addition to regular school hours, Ms. Xuan also proposed to implement a series of activities "Building a fun and healthy learning environment" with playgrounds organized periodically every quarter. Quarter 1 has a folk game playground "Vietnamese Tet", quarter 2 is a playground "Fun Science ", quarter 3 is a playground "Physical training, happy and healthy going to school" and quarter 4 has a knowledge playground "Ring the Golden Bell".

The playgrounds are fun and exciting, but also help students absorb knowledge in a gentle way so that each day at school they do not feel too much pressure about studying. In addition, to help students enjoy learning history, the young teacher also suggested that the school implement the playground "I love Vietnamese history". In the summer, there is a playground "Children of the 4.0 era" at the activity site of Duong Cong Khi Primary School.

One time, a student called her a superhero. Surprised, Ms. Xuan asked, "Why do you say that?" The girl wittily replied, "I see that you have many jobs. You are a teacher, a director, a tailor, a camera technician, and a music producer for our performances. In class, you are also a judge when we argue. I will pay you 10 times more."

Hearing that, the teacher could only smile. Because in the eyes of her students, she was a multi-talented person who could do anything. "Sometimes I think no one sees what I do, but the students observe everything, take note of everything, and see the sacrifices and affection that teachers have for their students. That is the motivation for me and many other teachers to try hard every day," Ms. Xuan confided.

Meanwhile, "the teacher-in-law" is not far behind. Although he teaches math, he has integrated STEM into the lessons to create excitement, change the environment to help students experience and no longer find the subject too dry. And Mr. Tung leading students to the school yard to experience building flower beds is a way for students to apply math to solve practical problems.

For young teachers like my husband and I, the title "Outstanding Young Teachers of Ho Chi Minh City" is a recognition of the process, creating motivation to strive together. Not only our family and unit are proud of us, but each of us is proud of our "opponent".

Coincidence

There are many strange coincidences of this young couple of teachers. Both were admitted to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Saigon University, but in the end, they chose to study at Saigon University even though they did not know each other before. They have the same passion when they both like the Youth Union activities and became a couple from the cradle of Youth Union activities. "It can be said that we always "sound the same, attract the same people" to boldly move forward together, being a solid support for each other. The title has fueled the fire of love for the profession, becoming a memorable mark in the career of my husband and I", Ms. Xuan shared.

Many achievements together

The young couple also won many awards in their professional work and Youth Union activities. Mr. Tung won the highest prize in math at the Hoc Mon district excellent teacher competition for the 2022-2023 school year, and was recognized for his initiative "Designing STEM education applications" in teaching math for grades 6 and 7. Meanwhile, Ms. Xuan won third prize in the district-level excellent homeroom teacher competition for the 2023-2024 school year and was an excellent teacher at the district level the previous school year.

Notably, at the 2023 STEM Lesson Design and Application Contest organized by the Center for Youth Science and Technology Development (Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union), this couple both won first prize. Ms. Xuan won first prize in Group A (primary school) and Mr. Tung won first prize in Group B (secondary school). The young couple both completed and graduated with a master's degree and were admitted to the Party at the end of 2023.
