South Korea wants to use drones to monitor rivers and streams in real time during heavy rains to detect the risk of overflowing or other damage.

The information was announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea on August 1. Vice Minister Cho Seong-kyung visited the Data Network AI (DNA) + Drone testing facility of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Daejeon to inspect the development of technology that allows drones to monitor flooded areas.

Since 2020, ETRI has developed drone platform technologies such as 4K resolution drone data, 5G data communication for drones, and real-time AI analysis. The institute is also verifying water resources monitoring technology.

The ministry said the drones will assist in evacuation and rescue operations during heavy rains. They can detect people in real time and determine the condition of nearby areas through high-resolution photos and videos taken by the drones during dam discharges.

Since June 2023, heavy rains have occurred in South Korea, causing great damage. According to the Meteorological Administration, the average rainfall during the 31-day rainy season was 648.7 millimeters, the third highest after 2006 and 2020.

According to Vice Minister Cho Seong-kyung, the Ministry of Science and ICT will do its best to develop technology and apply drone monitoring services as quickly as possible to prevent damage caused by heavy rain.
