VnExpressVnExpress06/02/2024

Hanoi Nguyen Han Bach, an 11th grade student at Tay Ho High School, is a rare candidate who did not study at a specialized school and achieved a 9.0 IELTS.

On the morning of February 6, IDP, one of the two IELTS test organizers in Vietnam, announced that Bach's scores in the three skills of Listening, Reading, and Speaking were all 9, and his Writing score was 8.5. This was Bach's first time taking the IELTS test, taking the test on a computer on February 1 and receiving the results three days later.

According to statistics on the IELTS homepage, in 2022, about 1% of IELTS test takers in Vietnam achieved a score of 8.5 or higher. At the 9.0 mark, only a dozen people achieved it, most of them were students from specialized schools or IELTS teachers.

"My son is excited and healthy with the results and is motivated for the next goal of the national excellent student award for grade 12," said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Bach's father, adding that his son was determined to get a high IELTS score before taking the exam.

Ms. Ha Thi Ngoc Ha, Bach's homeroom teacher at Tay Ho High School, said she was not surprised. She said that the skill scores were consistent with the student's ability. Bach's 11I2 class followed the A block (Math, Physics, Chemistry) orientation, studying the IELTS joint program in a two-year schedule. In 10th grade, Bach won first prize in the Ba Dinh - Tay Ho cluster Olympic exam in English. In addition, the male student did well in the remaining subjects.

"Bach is friendly and polite to teachers and is willing to help his friends. He is also one of the serious students with a strong will to study," commented Ms. Ha.
