More than 5,700 hectares of Summer-Autumn rice need to prevent leaf rollers

According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (DPP), as of July 31, 1,234.4 hectares of early-season rice were infected with leaf rollers, of which 852.5 hectares were moderately infected and the rest were lightly infected.

It is forecasted that larvae will bloom and cause damage in early to mid-August, in which the expected area for prevention is: Early-season tea is about 2,200 hectares, the best prevention time is from August 1-5; Mid-season tea is more than 3,500 hectares, the best prevention time is from August 6-10, some districts with later planting areas can spray later, but not later than August 13.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued Document No. 1189/SNN-TT&BVTV on focusing on directing the care and prevention of pests in the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop. It clearly states: “... in the fields, a number of harmful organisms (PPOs) have appeared, posing a risk of affecting the growth, development and yield of rice in the coming time, especially the small leaf roller, the estimated area that needs to be prevented is about 5,750 hectares; in addition, harmful rats, brown spot, physiological blight, and bacterial streak are also showing an increasing tendency to cause damage in August”.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requested the People's Committees of districts, cities and towns to direct communes, towns and production facilities to properly implement a number of contents on taking care of the Summer-Autumn rice crop, preventing and controlling rice pests and providing agricultural materials.

The Department requested the Plant Protection Sub-Department to direct its subordinate stations to strengthen investigation, forecasting, issue weekly notices and advise on measures to direct and guide timely prevention of SVGH. Accordingly, technical staff will guide production facilities and farmers to prevent at the right time to ensure high efficiency.

People need to take advantage of the dry time of the day to spray pesticides. If it rains after spraying or the areas are infected with leaf rollers at a high density of over 100 insects/m2, it is necessary to check and spray again 3 to 5 days after the first time. Areas infected with small leaf rollers and brown spot disease can be sprayed with a mixture of pesticides to reduce the number of sprays, reduce labor, and increase prevention efficiency.
