More than 86,000 tons of foreign pork flooded into Vietnam, priced at more than 65,000 VND/kg

(Dan Tri) - In the past 7 months, Vietnam spent more than 1 billion USD importing meat and meat products, of which 86,100 tons of frozen pork, worth more than 230 million USD.

The Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) said that in the past 7 months, Vietnam imported 534,800 tons of meat and meat products, worth 1.06 billion USD, up 11% in volume and 13.1% in value over the same period last year.

India, Russia, the US, Brazil, and Poland are the five major markets supplying meat and meat products to Vietnam. Of which, India is the largest supplier of meat and meat products with 95,500 tons, worth 334.51 million USD, down 10.8% in volume and 4.7% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

Vietnam mainly imports meats such as poultry (39.4% in volume), frozen buffalo meat (16%), pork, buffalo and beef by-products (19.6%), pork (16.1%), beef (3.7%); other items account for 5.2% in volume and 3.4% in value.

Regarding pork alone, in the first 7 months, Vietnam imported 86,100 tons of chilled or frozen meat, worth 230.76 million USD, up 68.7% in volume and 98.5% in value over the same period in 2024. The average import price of pork to Vietnam was 2,676 USD/ton (more than 65,000 VND/kg), up 17.78% over the first 7 months of 2024.

Currently, Vietnam imports pork from 21 markets. Of which, Russia continues to be the largest pork supplier, accounting for 47.49%. Next is Brazil accounting for 32.06%; Spain accounting for 4.92%; Canada accounting for 4.37%; Poland accounting for 3.2%; and other markets accounting for 7.96%.

On the other hand, in the past 7 months, Vietnam exported 13,050 tons of meat and meat products, worth 68.75 million USD, down 2.6% in volume, but up 22.6% in value compared to the first 7 months of 2024.

Vietnam's meat and meat products are exported the most to the Hong Kong market (China) with 6,080 tons, worth 41.09 million USD, accounting for 46.63% in volume and 59.77% in value. The main export items are mainly frozen goods such as suckling pig, frozen whole pork...

Regarding the domestic market, according to data from the Center for Industry and Trade Information, in August, the price of live pigs nationwide tended to decrease compared to July, fluctuating between 55,000-65,000 VND/kg.

In the North, prices ranged from 55,000 to 65,000 VND/kg, a decrease of 14,000 to 18,000 VND/kg in the past month. In the Central and Central Highlands, prices were 56,000 to 64,000 VND/kg, a decrease of 11,000 to 19,000 VND/kg. In the South, the price of live pigs remained at 58,000 to 65,000 VND/kg, a decrease of 8,000 to 17,000 VND/kg.

According to some pork traders, pork consumption has recently decreased mainly due to concerns about the outbreak of African swine fever. People have limited their pork purchases and switched to alternative foods such as chicken and fish, causing a sharp decrease in consumption.
