US President Donald Trump's plan to gradually abolish the Department of Education

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí09/02/2025

(Dan Tri) - US President Donald Trump is actively preparing for a plan to streamline and eventually eliminate the US Department of Education , as part of a plan to reduce the size of the US government to save the state budget.

The plan to abolish the US Department of Education began with US President Donald Trump asking his nominee for Secretary of Education - Ms. Linda McMahon - to carry out a plan to streamline the staff. Whether or not the Department of Education will actually be abolished depends on the approval of the US Congress .

In an official White House memo to the US media this week, US President Donald Trump has set the first task for his nominee for Secretary of Education: to push through the plan to cut the US Department of Education's staff.

During his campaign, Mr. Trump mentioned that he would abolish the Department of Education. In fact, in the nearly 5 decades of the US Department of Education's existence, the effectiveness of this agency has been a topic of debate among US politicians . There are politicians who believe that the US Department of Education's operations are ineffective and cause waste of budget.

However, in reality, the US Department of Education is operating programs that are considered quite important for the education system in this country. These are financial aid programs for public schools that have difficulty in financial autonomy, or programs to support poor students who borrow money to cover tuition fees at university level.

The US Department of Education receives a budget of about $79 billion each year. Earlier this February, the Office of Personnel Management - the US government's human resources agency - issued a notice about President Trump's new directive to more than 2 million employees working for the federal government.

Accordingly, Mr. Trump mentioned paying high salaries to officials who intend to quit as a way to support the policy of streamlining the US government. Those who register to quit before February 6 will receive salary and benefits from the time of submitting their resignation until September 30.

This is part of the Trump administration's efforts to cut the size of the US government and save the state budget, with the goal of saving up to 100 billion USD.

The personnel working in the US Department of Education are also subject to this direction. The nominee for Secretary of Education - Ms. Linda McMahon - is said to soon give a detailed plan on streamlining the apparatus, as well as how this unit will continue to undertake or transfer important tasks to other units, after the personnel streamlining or even being eliminated.
