During the inspection trip to recover from floods, prepare for the new school year and provide support to schools and teachers affected by storm No. 3 in Muong Xen, Bac Ly and My Ly communes on August 8, Mr. Thai Van Thanh - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An shared the difficulties of the units, especially when the preparation for the new school year is near.

“Schools must clearly list the damage and propose detailed needs for equipment, clothing, and school books so that the industry can provide timely support. No student will be left behind after the flood or have to drop out of school due to lack of resources,” Mr. Thanh emphasized.

The head of the Nghe An Education Department also predicted difficulties in the new school year, in which, in addition to preparing facilities, it is also necessary to do a good job of mobilizing students to go to school.

Through the survey, Mr. Thanh said that for schools that were severely damaged and not safe enough to continue using, the immediate solution is to temporarily transfer students to safe schools, supplement and repair facilities to start the new school year.

The Government has decided to support Nghe An province with 300 billion VND. Nghe An province has also planned to provide 50 billion VND to the Education sector to overcome the flood. The Department will distribute this amount to the localities and schools that have suffered damage to promptly repair and purchase equipment, ensuring adequate basic facilities for teaching and learning when entering the new school year.

Nghe An Department of Education and Training gives support to schools damaged by floods

In recent days, to accompany schools, the Education sector has launched a campaign across the sector and mobilized more than 3 billion VND from contributions.

On this occasion, the Nghe An Department of Education and Training has awarded nearly 1.2 billion VND to support schools and teachers affected by floods. The support level for schools is from 25 - 300 million VND/school and for teachers is from 5 - 10 million VND/person.

Promoting the "school helping school" movement after the flood

Nearly three weeks after the historic flood, My Ly 2 Primary School (My Ly Commune, Nghe An Province) is still submerged in mud and soil. Mr. Tran Sy Ha, Principal of the school, said that dozens of computers, televisions, projectors, etc. used for teaching and most of the equipment were damaged due to being soaked in mud. "The amount of mud that flooded into the school is huge, we are focusing on cleaning up this layer of mud before making the next plan," Mr. Ha said.

Giving gifts to teachers whose houses and property were damaged

The recent floods caused by storm No. 3 have buried 40 schools in the mountainous communes in the west of Nghe An province in mud and soil, causing severe damage. Immediately after the flood, Mr. Thai Van Thanh, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An province, launched the "school helping school" movement to help overcome the damage caused by the flood.

Following the call, hundreds of teachers from lowland schools brought hoes, shovels, and food to support their colleagues in clearing mud and cleaning classrooms in preparation for the approaching new school year. Not only did they contribute their working days, but they also donated a portion of their salaries to support schools, teachers, and students that suffered heavy damage.

Many schools are still in disarray after historic flash floods.

Mr. Cao Thanh Tuan, Principal of Dien Chau 2 High School (Duc Chau Commune, Nghe An Province) said that in response to the call of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, on July 29, a group of 16 teachers from the school traveled more than 200km to Tuong Duong and Tam Quang communes to help overcome the consequences of floods.

“Not only did the teachers help the schools and houses of their colleagues that were flooded, they also went directly to the village to help with digging, clearing mud, cleaning houses, and helping people stabilize their homes. At the same time, they gave gifts, including food, clothes, drinking water, essential items, and some cash support,” said Mr. Tuan.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kieu Hoa, Principal of Nghe An Province Ethnic Boarding High School, said that due to the school's characteristics, students are mainly from highland communes, so right after the flood ended, the school contacted the students to visit and grasp the damage situation.

Teachers from lowland areas help mountainous schools clean up classrooms after floods.

To encourage teachers and students who suffered heavy losses and stabilize their lives before the new school year, the school called on teachers to donate nearly 300 million VND. In addition, the school also bought books, clothes and other essential necessities to visit and give to students and teachers.

“Many teachers also volunteered to go, but the school only selected 18 teachers who were healthy enough. After understanding the situation, the school decided to go to support 2 schools in the border commune of Muong Tip to clean up. Coming here, directly seeing some schools devastated by the flood, I felt heartbroken,” Ms. Hoa shared.

“The “schools helping schools” movement not only helps schools quickly overcome the consequences of floods to prepare for the new school year, but also contributes to spreading humanistic values, fostering the spirit of solidarity and sharing throughout the industry. Through these concrete and meaningful actions, I believe that we are nurturing an education that is not only strong in expertise but also profound in ethics, for the people,” shared Thai Van Thanh, Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training.
