Strange 'free-range' chicken rice in Ho Chi Minh City: The owner is a vegetarian and doesn't taste the food she cooks.

The popular crispy chicken rice restaurant located in Khanh Hoi Ward, Ho Chi Minh City (old District 4) owned by Ms. Nga (64 years old) has been a "favorite restaurant" for many customers for more than ten years. Recently, the restaurant has become famous on social networks for its unique way of selling "free-range" chicken rice.

Why does the shop sell rope?

At noon, Mrs. Nga’s restaurant is bustling with customers. Her sisters and children are busy preparing hot meals for the customers, not making anyone wait long.

Most of the customers here buy take-out. It seems that everyone is too familiar with the scene of dropping a rope to receive the order when coming to the shop. After welcoming the customers, Mrs. Nga from downstairs called up to her nephew who was on the first floor to tell him what to make.

A moment later, the hot chicken rice was put into a bag and then lowered down. The owner quickly came to get the rice and deliver it to the customer. Just like that, one customer after another came to buy, the shipper came to pick up the goods and deliver them.

Before this unique way of selling, Ms. Nga's restaurant also sold normally like many other restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City. "However, for more than a year now, due to space issues, my restaurant has moved to my house to make it more convenient to prepare the dishes, then hang the rope down for customers.

Many people also like this way of cooking. When cooking at home, guests cannot see, but the kitchen is always clean and tidy. When preparing dishes, I always put hygiene first," the owner proudly introduced, leading me into the kitchen to visit.

Since selling by rope, the owner confided that business has not changed much. Customers still come to support the shop regularly like they have for many years. The shop is located opposite a school and next to an apartment building, so many customers are students and young people.

Mrs. Nga has been selling ginseng tea in this area for nearly 30 years. However, after her mother passed away, she stopped selling. A few years later, in 2014, she decided to open this restaurant, and has been selling it ever since.

Raising grandchildren to go to college

Not everyone knows that the restaurant owner has been a vegetarian for decades. That is why she says she doesn’t eat the food she cooks. However, with her years of experience in running the restaurant, she knows by heart how to cook chicken rice to taste without the need for seasoning.

This restaurant, with the support of customers, has supported Mrs. Nga's family for many years, helping the owner send her orphaned grandchild to college. For the owner, the restaurant is not only a place to make a living but also a passion and a memory with her family members, with the loyal customers who have come to support her for many years.

Each meal at the restaurant is affordable, from 20,000 VND - 30,000 VND depending on the customer's needs. Among them, the dish that is known to many customers is still crispy chicken rice, which has created the brand of Mrs. Nga's restaurant.

The restaurant is open every day from 9am to 9pm. A regular customer of this restaurant for nearly 2 years, Nhut Hao (26 years old) said he is "addicted" to the crispy chicken rice. Occasionally, he also eats char siu chicken rice for a change.

"My house is nearby so I often come here to buy. I used to know about this restaurant online and found it close to my house so I stopped by to try it out. The food was delicious and I've been a regular customer ever since. For the past few months, this restaurant has been selling drop-shipping, which seems a bit strange. Recently, I've seen some restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City applying this method," the customer laughed and shared.

At this age, Mrs. Nga’s happiness is working hard every day with her family at the restaurant, bringing the hearty chicken rice to customers. She said she will maintain this way of selling until it is no longer suitable…
