Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution, National Day September 2 and 55 years of establishing diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Sri Lanka

Joining the heroic atmosphere of the whole country in these historic days, on the evening of August 19, at Hilton Colombo Hotel, the Vietnamese Embassy in Sri Lanka solemnly held the ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2025), the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025) and the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Sri Lanka (July 21, 1970 - 2025).

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Workers and Tourism Vijitha Herah as the Chief Guest, representing the Government of Sri Lanka.

Also attending were Vice President of Parliament Rizvie Salih; Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake; Minister of Buddhism, Religion and Culture Hiniduma Sunil Senevi; Minister of Youth and Sports Sunil Gamage; General Secretary of the ruling NPP/JVP, General Secretary of the Communist Party; Governor of Western Province; Mayor of Colombo City; Former Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena; Former Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya; Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry; along with many leaders of ministries, sectors, parliamentarians, diplomatic corps, international friends and the Vietnamese community in Sri Lanka.

In her speech, Ambassador Trinh Thi Tam reviewed Vietnam's outstanding achievements in various fields after 80 years of independence, emphasizing the great support and assistance of the international community for Vietnam's national construction and development, including friends from Sri Lanka.

Expressing his delight that the Vietnam-Sri Lanka relationship over the past 55 years has been continuously consolidated and developed in many fields, from politics - diplomacy, economics - trade, to culture, education and people-to-people exchange, the Ambassador recalled the good results of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's state visit and participation in the United Nations Vesak Celebration last May.

The Ambassador emphasized that the two countries still have a lot of potential for cooperation that needs to be exploited in the coming time for common interests and sustainable development in the future.

Minister Vijitha Herath expressed satisfaction with the positive development of the Vietnam-Sri Lanka friendship and comprehensive cooperation after 55 years of establishing diplomatic relations; affirmed that Sri Lanka always attaches importance to and wishes to further strengthen cooperation with Vietnam not only in traditional fields such as trade, tourism, education and cultural exchange but also expand to other potential fields such as energy, technology, health, construction..., and continue to actively cooperate and support each other at multilateral forums.

The highlight of the ceremony was a special art performance by Vietnamese artists from the Thang Long Song and Dance Theatre, including interesting collaborations with Sri Lankan artists when they performed the Vietnamese song “Trông cốm” or “Ran BinduBindi” (a Sri Lankan folk song about a bountiful harvest), creating an impressive cultural exchange space. Minister Vijitha Herath was very excited to try performing the monochord with the guidance of Vietnamese artists.

After the performance, guests enjoyed traditional Vietnamese dishes prepared and introduced by two chefs from Hilton Danang Hotel.

The event left many good impressions in the hearts of international friends, contributing to tightening friendship, consolidating trust and opening up new prospects for cooperation between Vietnam and Sri Lanka in the coming time.

Also in the series of activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of National Day and 55 years of establishing diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Sri Lanka, the Vietnamese Embassy in Sri Lanka will organize a Cultural Day in Abakote, the capital of the Central Province of Sri Lanka and a “Taste of Vietnam” Culinary Week in Colombo, which will introduce Vietnamese dishes from different regions of the country and famous Vietnamese coffees.
