Iran's Supreme Leader Responds to Israel's Attack

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on October 27 gave his first reaction to Israel's airstrike on Iran in the early morning of October 26.


Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said on October 27 that the country's military officials should decide how to respond to Israel's attack on Iran on October 26, but should not downplay or exaggerate the incident, according to The Guardian .

Mr Khamenei stressed that Iran's strength should be shown to Israel. "The authorities must decide how to convey the strength and will of the Iranian people to the Israeli regime and carry out actions that serve the interests of this country," Mr Khamenei said.

Khamenei's comments indicate that no immediate military response from Iran is planned, as Tehran is weighing its options, according to The Guardian . This is the Iranian supreme leader's first response to Israel's October 26 attack.

On October 26, Tehran downplayed the severity of an Israeli airstrike on military targets in Iran, saying the airstrike caused only limited damage, according to The Guardian .

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on October 27: "The Air Force attacked Iran. We attacked Iran's defense capabilities and missile production capabilities aimed at us. The attack on Iran was precise and powerful, and achieved all its objectives."

In addition, The New York Times cited several sources as confirming that Israel's October 26 attack destroyed air defense systems set up to protect several important oil refineries and petrochemical plants and a large gas field in Iran.
