UN concerned about progress of political dialogue in Haiti

On December 8, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern about the limited progress in dialogue in Haiti on democratic institutions there.

Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric's spokesman said Mr. Guterres was concerned about “limited progress in the dialogue between Haiti and the United States toward a lasting and comprehensive political solution to restore the country's democratic institutions.”

The UN Secretary-General stressed the importance of the agreement on this issue, including holding “credible, participatory and inclusive” elections to achieve the rule of law and restore security in the country.

Mr. Guterres called on all political actors in Haiti to meet to reach an agreement.

The UN Secretary-General also expressed interest in continuing preparations for the deployment of an international security assistance mission to Haiti, affirming that this is an “urgent need”, in the context of the worsening crisis.

Mr. Guterres fully supports the efforts of the Community of Caribbean States (Caricom) and the United Nations Office in Haiti (BINUH) to facilitate sustainable solutions to the Central American country's political crisis.
