There is always a way

- A river transport company has just opened a container transport route from Can Tho to Cai Mep port. This route is 200km long, the train travel time is 15 hours. Compared to the two existing road routes, the new waterway has a faster transport time.

- But saying that waterways are new seems wrong, especially for the Mekong Delta?

- That is the paradox. The burden of transport for many years has been on the road. Not only is the cost high, but roads are also prone to congestion when traffic density is high or accidents occur. Diverse rivers are a natural condition available in the Western provinces. However, currently the market share of river transport only accounts for 19%. The majority of exported goods to Ho Chi Minh City seaports still travel by road.

- Why are waterways getting attention again?

- Shorter transport time than road transport is a clear advantage. Therefore, river transport has lower fuel costs. On the other hand, the cost of loading and unloading containers via waterways at seaports and river ports is also much lower than that of road transport. The push for greening and low emissions opens up new opportunities for river transport.

- Businesses are still worried because the cost of building ships running on electricity or liquefied gas is very high. Vehicles using hybrid engines (combining gasoline/diesel and electricity) have an advantage. When proactively looking for a way out, there will always be a way.
