Expanding the scale and quality of training in mathematical sciences in Vietnam

The above information was shared at the conference to review the "National Key Program for Mathematics Development for the 2021-2030 period" organized by the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics on October 22.

According to Decision No. 2200/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister, the National Key Program for Mathematics Development for the period 2021 - 2030 (Program) is chaired by the Ministry of Education and Training , with the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics as the permanent coordinating unit. During the period 2021 - 2023, the Program has been implementing meaningful, effective activities with strong impacts on the development of mathematics in the country.

Communication activities to raise awareness about the role of mathematics are organized in many provinces and cities across the country, attracting and spreading widely. Activities to promote applied mathematics research are promoted, initially creating a research network on applied statistics, operations research, mathematical modeling in climate change and the environment, cryptography and information security, data science , artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain...

The program has supported the implementation of the 2018 General Mathematics Education Program, which focuses on in-depth training in a number of knowledge streams. The program helps expand the scale and quality of training in the field of mathematical sciences. Previously, most of the mathematics training schools in Vietnam were in the field of mathematics pedagogy, with the goal of training to become mathematics teachers.

Recently, due to the profound influence of mathematics, especially artificial intelligence, data science in other fields, many universities have opened new training majors in applied mathematics, statistics, data science such as Fulbright University, International University - National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho University, Quy Nhon University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology...

Many schools have established Faculty of Mathematics/Statistics/Data Science such as University of Commerce, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Banking Academy... This is a sign of the penetration of mathematics in many professions and fields, increasing interest in teaching and researching mathematics.

Affirming the enhanced position of Vietnamese mathematics, Associate Professor Dr. Le Minh Ha - Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics said: In recent times, Vietnam has become a familiar address for international scientists. International cooperation activities are very busy, contributing to improving the quality of research and teaching in the country.

In 2025, there will be many major international activities such as: the London Mathematical Society meeting; the ICIAM Board Meeting; the Asian Regional Statistics Conference...

In particular, in 2027, Vietnam will host and be selected to organize the International Conference on Mathematical Physics (ICMP). This is a very prestigious international conference, with a scale of nearly 1,000 people, with the participation of many leading mathematicians and physicists in the world.
