The United States has called on the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to participate in the ongoing US-brokered ceasefire talks in Switzerland, but on the first day of the talks, only the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attended.

On August 14, Anadolu news agency quoted US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel as saying: "We have emphasized that the SAF has a responsibility to be there and we will continue to clarify that."

Mr. Patel declined to say whether the United States was optimistic that Sudan's military would join the talks.

Peace talks on the conflict in Sudan - promoted by the US, co-chaired by Egypt and Switzerland, and observed by the African Union, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United Nations - began on August 14 in the Swiss city of Geneva, although the SAF was not present on that day.

Ahead of the talks, Sudanese Communications Minister Graham Abdelkader said the government would reject "any new observers or participants", after Washington "insisted on the UAE's participation as an observer".

The Sudanese military has repeatedly accused the UAE of supporting the RSF, although the country has denied this.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Tom Perriello, US special envoy to Sudan, said that "it is time for the guns to be silent".

Without the SAF, other participants will continue the peace talks' agenda, with a focus on "moving towards achieving a cessation of hostilities, enhancing humanitarian access and establishing implementation mechanisms that deliver concrete results".

The peace talks on the Sudan situation are expected to last up to 10 days and will be held at a secret location in Switzerland.
