Limited production capacity makes it difficult for businesses to catch the wave of supply chain shifts

DNVN - The wave of shifting global supply chains is opening up a historic opportunity for Vietnam to become a new manufacturing center of the world. However, the answer to the question "is it ready?" is still open when internal supply capacity is considered the biggest challenge for Vietnamese enterprises.

Many opinions say that foreign enterprises are tending to transfer orders to Vietnam from markets affected by geopolitical fluctuations. Assessing this issue, a representative of the Department of Foreign Market Development ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) affirmed that this is a great opportunity for the Vietnamese economy and enterprises.

Vietnam possesses many competitive advantages to become a new "factory" of the world, including: strategic geographical location, stable political environment, competitive labor costs, and especially a network of 17 free trade agreements (FTAs) with more than 60 countries and regions.

Production capacity of many enterprises is still limited.

Statistics show that Vietnam's export turnover in the first half of 2025 reached nearly 220 billion USD, up 14.4% over the same period last year. FDI inflows into Vietnam are also constantly increasing, with registered capital reaching 11.72 billion USD in the first 6 months of 2025, up 8.1% over the same period in 2024. This opportunity not only helps increase exports but also promotes technology transfer, improves production capacity and helps Vietnamese enterprises integrate more deeply into the global supply chain.

Although the opportunities are clear, according to the Foreign Market Department, the supply capacity of Vietnamese enterprises still has certain limitations.

Firstly, production capacity is still limited, especially in industries requiring high technology. Many businesses still depend on imported raw materials and have not invested enough in modern technology, leading to difficulties in meeting the quality, quantity and progress requirements of demanding markets such as the US and EU.

Second, high-quality human resources in fields such as semiconductors and high technology still cannot meet demand.

Third, trade barriers such as anti-dumping taxes and trade defense investigations require businesses to strictly comply with regulations on the origin of goods.

In addition, fierce competition from FDI enterprises with advantages in capital, technology and distribution networks is also a big challenge.
