Russia advances in Ukraine at fastest speed since the beginning of the war

Russian forces are advancing in Ukraine at their fastest pace since the start of the conflict, seizing control of hundreds of square kilometers of territory in the past month.

Russia has set a new weekly and monthly record for the amount of land it controls in Ukraine, according to the independent Russian news website Agentstvo. The Russian military controlled nearly 235 ^square kilometers of land in Ukraine last week, a record for 2024, Reuters reported, citing data.

Meanwhile, data from the Ukrainian military-linked war-monitoring website DeepState shows that in November, Russia controlled 600 ^square kilometers.

Since July, Russia has begun to advance more rapidly in eastern Ukraine, while Kyiv has only made small gains in Russia's western Kursk province since August. DeepState's open-source map shows Russia has accelerated since then.

Analysts say Russian troops are advancing toward the town of Kurakhove, a key stepping stone toward the logistics hub of Pokrovsk in Donetsk province. At the same time, Russia is exploiting Ukrainian weaknesses along the frontline.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW, USA) said in a report on November 25 that the Russian army has recently advanced at a much faster pace than in all of 2023.

In a report on the same day, the General Staff of the Ukrainian army said that there were 45 points of conflict of varying intensity occurring along the frontline in Kurakhove.

ISW and pro-Russian military bloggers both said Russian troops were present in Kurakhove, while DeepState reported Russian units were approaching the town.

Russia and Ukraine have not commented on the above assessments. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Russia's main goal is to control the entire Donbass, the region that includes the two provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk, and to expel Ukrainian troops from Kursk.
