Woman dies suspected of eating fried locusts

Recently, Nghe An Northwestern Regional General Hospital received patient Nguyen Thi Oanh (27 years old) for emergency treatment in a state of itchy rash all over her body, difficulty breathing, and chest pain. The woman had circulatory arrest for 15 minutes, but after emergency treatment, her pulse returned.

These symptoms appeared just two hours after eating fried grasshoppers. From there, the doctor diagnosed the patient with anaphylactic shock, suspected to be caused by eating fried grasshoppers.

Despite being treated with endotracheal intubation, central venous catheter placement, mechanical ventilation and intravenous fluids, the patient did not recover. At 3 a.m. on August 15, the family predicted a serious prognosis so they asked to take the victim home, but he died a few hours later.

According to information, on the afternoon of August 14, Ms. Oanh’s family organized a meal, which included fried grasshoppers. Some other people also ate this dish but did not show any symptoms.

Grasshoppers, also known as royal insects, have a green-yellow, yellow-green or shiny brown body. The head of the grasshopper is a blunt triangle, the antennae are short and thin, the abdomen has ridges, the hind legs are larger than the front legs. The young are 1-2 cm long, and the adults are 3-4 cm long.

Locusts often appear after the winter-spring rice harvest, in abandoned gardens and fields. People in some areas often catch locusts to prepare dishes during the season.

However, dishes made from insects such as bees, ant eggs, silkworm pupae, grasshoppers, crickets, termites, cicadas..., are considered by many people as specialties, but have caused many cases of poisoning, anaphylactic shock, and endangering lives.

To prevent the above cases, people should limit eating strange foods or insects. People with allergies who experience unusual symptoms after eating, such as fatigue, dizziness, nausea, rash, abdominal pain, digestive disorders, should go to the hospital immediately for timely treatment.
