Young people continue the old profession

Besides the developing craft villages, there are still some that are gradually fading away. Many young people approach technology, grasp trends and market needs to revive the craft villages where they were born and raised.

My Luong carpentry village, Long Dien commune was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as a traditional craft village in 2006. Since then, the craft village has continuously developed, with diverse products such as: cabinets, tables, chairs, beds, interior and exterior decoration, with many different designs, models, and wood materials, making it very convenient for customers to choose. The craft village also creates many jobs for rural workers with a significant income.

In craft villages, while the generation of dedicated artisans is getting older and less involved in production, many young people are starting their own businesses in traditional occupations with the determination to continue their legacy. A typical example is Mr. Nguyen Toan Nhan, owner of the high-end wooden furniture store Dai Toan Nhan. Mr. Nhan's store chooses high-end wood, which has better durability, color, and grain than regular wood.

Mr. Nhan's high-end product lines are mainly made from imported wood from South Africa, and rosewood from the Eastern provinces, Laos and the Kingdom of Cambodia, which has high durability. Mr. Nhan also offers free maintenance due to impact, warranty against termites and damage. At the same time, he cooperates with banks to sell in installments. This new and flexible way has helped Mr. Nhan attract a large number of customers to shop at the facility. Currently, the facility's wooden household products are available in most of the Western provinces. Product prices range from several tens to several hundred million VND, depending on the quality of the wood.

In Ba Chuc commune, the traditional craft of weaving sedge mats has been flourishing in recent years. The person who brought a new breeze to the craft is Ms. Tran Thi Trang, owner of Trung Trang. Growing up with sedge mats, Ms. Trang understands the ups and downs of the local traditional craft.

To be able to weave a beautiful, delicate mattress, after purchasing the raw materials, the craftsman must carefully select them, not choosing a sedge that is too big or too soft. Depending on the size of each sedge, the craftsman will create a separate product. Larger sedges are woven faster, are not as beautiful, so they are sold at a cheaper price, only half the price of small sedge mattresses, and are used to dry rice. Small sedges are used to weave sleeping mattresses, storage bags, etc. Under the skillful and talented hands of the craftsman, from a wild plant, sedge products are associated with many people, such as: Lying and covering mattresses (some are up to 1.8m long and 1.4m wide), mattresses for lining cribs to rock children to sleep, etc.

The cypress cushions were gradually replaced by “modern” products, no longer having a place. Seeing this, Ms. Trang wanted to revive the traditional craft in the locality. Thanks to years of working, studying, and learning about the surrounding handicraft products, the girl in the cypress cushion hamlet of Ba Chuc had a new perspective. She researched and learned online, designed new models for handbags, backpacks, wallets, sandals, etc., and meticulously painted and decorated the products. Thanks to that, the products were well received by the market, and the cypress cushion hamlet became bustling again.

Not only determined to continue the traditional career of their homeland, many young people are passionate about innovation, constantly learning, becoming the next generation, "keeping the fire" of traditional professions, in their own way.
