Free modern 6-storey parking lot for students, about 4 billion VND per year

For the past five years, students have been able to park their vehicles for free at a modern six-story parking garage that the university has invested more than 10 billion VND in. Parking fees, if collected each year, would be about 4 billion VND.

While students are unhappy with the higher parking fees at universities than at shopping malls, a reader said that at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, students have been able to park for free for many years.

Arriving at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, it is easy to see the modern six-story parking building with two staff on duty at the entrance. On each floor there is a staff in charge of parking.

According to Tuoi Tre Online on December 5, although there were a lot of students coming to school, the parking lot was not congested because there was someone standing in front constantly coordinating.

The garage has staff on duty 24/7 to support and coordinate students.

Students who park their bikes only need to wait for their identification card to be scanned and they can go straight to the garage. Retrieving their bikes is also quick because they only need to swipe the original card to be able to leave. Students do not need to prepare small change or wait for change, wasting time.

This garage is especially connected directly to the lecture hall, students can take the elevator up to get their car conveniently.

Inside the six-story building, cars are lined up in rows of no more than two to allow for an exit. On each floor, there are staff members who guide students to the correct parking space. The parking garage is covered and airy.

Dao Duc Huy, a fourth-year student, said that he was impressed with the parking lot here from the first day he entered the school. For the past four years, Huy has not had to pay for parking on campus.

The parking staff are always friendly and cheerful with students. “I see that there are parking staff on every floor to help. If you see that there are no seats, just ask the staff there, they will arrange and guide you to park neatly,” Huy said.

Huy admitted that there are times when the parking lot is overloaded, so the staff will guide students to the old parking lot in the physical education area or students can wait for the staff to coordinate.

In addition to the 6-storey parking garage, there are also 2 basements at the front gate for student parking.

Thanh Hoa, a third-year student at the school, shared: "The six-story parking garage has a roof, so parking your bike inside is cool and you don't have to worry about the seat getting hot like when parking in an outdoor parking lot. There is an elevator from the lecture hall, so it's very convenient."

Mr. Thai Doan Thanh - Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade - said that although the school loses a significant amount of money each year, student satisfaction is more important than this amount of money.

Mr. Thanh said that since 2019, the school has not collected parking fees from students. There are many reasons, including the fact that students often go to and from school multiple times a day to attend multiple classes.

If we collect parking fees, students will spend a lot of money every month. Moreover, collecting fees causes traffic jams because they have to wait for change, students have urgent matters and sometimes are late for class.

"Free parking costs the school about 4 billion VND each year. However, this amount cannot be compared to sharing with students, their satisfaction and solving the problem of traffic jams in the school yard," Mr. Thanh added.

Previously, students parked their cars in the school yard. Since 2019, the school has invested in a multi-story parking garage for students to park their cars.

Mr. Thanh said the investment cost was more than 10 billion but the school yard is neat and clean. Students’ bikes are also kept in a covered garage instead of being left out in the rain and sun like before.
