At the start of the 2025 World Championship, the Japanese women's volleyball team was ranked last on the list of seeded teams.
Japan were ranked 7th in the world when entering the tournament, but according to bookmakers, they were ranked below Serbia (10th) in terms of winning odds. That is understandable because Serbia are the defending champions of 2 consecutive tournaments.
But it was Japan who defeated Serbia in the group stage, thereby forcing the defending champions to face the Netherlands in the round of 16. Japan, on the other hand, had no problem facing only Thailand.
The surprise continued in the round of 16 when China - considered the strongest Asian representative - lost to France in the round of 16.
Japan thus became the last hope of Asian women's volleyball at this year's world championship. And not only that, they also jumped into the top group of candidates.
In a poll on the prestigious Volleybox website, 79% of fans believe that Japan will defeat the Netherlands. This is a well-founded prediction because in the VNL (FIVB Nations League) 2025, Japan beat the Netherlands 3-0.
Among the quarter-final matches, the Japanese match is considered to have the highest difference. If they can easily beat the Netherlands, Japan will have a big advantage in the semi-final match.
Because at that time, their opponent was the winner of the US - Türkiye match, which took place 1 day later (ie with less rest days). Not to mention, the US and Türkiye were considered equally strong, promising to be "scratched and bruised" after the quarter-final round.
Bookmakers have therefore significantly improved Japan’s position. Their odds are now raised to 7/1 (bet 1 to win 7), on par with Türkiye, and only worse than Italy (2/1).
Many fans believe that this year's dream final will be between Italy - the strongest team in the world at the moment - and Japan.
