On the evening of August 31, China unexpectedly lost 1-3 to France in the round of 16 of the Women's Volleyball World Championship, thus having to stop too early compared to expectations, and at the same time losing to Japan in this year's tournament.

This is the worst performance of Chinese women's volleyball in many years. In the 2014 and 2018 tournaments, they both made it to the top 4, and also reached the quarterfinals in the 2022 tournament.

At the 2025 World Championship, the tournament size was increased from 24 to 32 teams, but the number of Asian representatives decreased due to the decline of teams from Korea, Kazakhstan...

Only four Asian teams qualified for this year's world championship, including host Thailand, China, Japan and Vietnam.

Among them, Vietnam will be participating in the world arena for the first time, thanks to its 4th place in the 2023 Asian Championship, and the champion team that year was Thailand (participating in the world tournament as host).

In their first participation, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team clearly has not yet adapted to the world-class playing field. Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team left the competition early after losing all 3 matches in the group stage.

Thailand - as the host nation, was drawn into a fairly easy group with the Netherlands, Sweden and Egypt, and advanced in second place.

But against the strong Japan in the round of 16, Thailand lost 0-3 and had to leave the game early.

China's defeat was the biggest surprise because France is not highly regarded in women's volleyball, and its position in the world rankings is also significantly lower than China's.

Thus, Japan will be the only Asian representative to participate in the quarterfinals. This result shows the extremely stable performance of Japanese women's volleyball.

Although no longer strong enough to compete for the world championship, Japanese women's volleyball has always maintained a place in the top 8 in every World Championship, since 2006 until now.

In the 2022 tournament, Japan ranked 5th. In this year's tournament, their chance of reaching the semi-finals is very high when they only have to face the not-so-strong Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
