Notable points about Russia's cancer vaccine

(Dan Tri) - The success of the Enteromix cancer vaccine opens up a breakthrough in cancer treatment. However, larger-scale phase II and III trials are still needed to confirm the vaccine's effectiveness.

Russian cancer vaccine effectiveness

The Week reported that recently, Ms. Veronika Skvortsova, head of the Russian Federal Biomedical Agency (FMBA), announced that the mRNA-based cancer vaccine called Enteromix has completed preclinical testing and is ready for use.

“The vaccine is ready for use, we are waiting for approval,” she said in an interview with a local newspaper.

According to her, studies have shown that the vaccine is safe when used repeatedly and is effective.

Researchers observed a reduction in tumor size and growth, by about 60-80%. It also showed improved patient survival rates.

The vaccine will be used first for colorectal cancer.

According to a News18 report, the phase I clinical trials involved 48 volunteers. No serious side effects were reported and the patients tolerated the treatment well.

Unlike conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, Enteromix works by targeting and eliminating cancer cells without damaging healthy tissue. Enteromix combines four harmless viruses that have been re-engineered to “hunt” for cancer cells and train the body’s immune system to fight back. The vaccine is highly personalized.

With clinical trials completed, Enteromix now needs approval from the Russian Ministry of Health .

How was Enteromix developed?

Most people are familiar with vaccines used to prevent infections like measles and chickenpox. The mechanism is that the immune system is trained to recognize and respond to harmful agents.

However, some vaccines can be designed to help the immune system identify and target cancer cells. According to the American Cancer Society, several cancer vaccines are being studied for prostate, bladder, and other cancers.

According to NDTV , Enteromix was born after many years of collaborative research between the National Medical Research Center for Radiology under the Russian Ministry of Health and the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology under the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

The vaccine uses mRNA technology, similar to the platform that allowed the rapid development of Covid-19 vaccines, to create a customized immune response against cancer cells, training the immune system to kill cancer cells without causing serious side effects.

Enteromix's personalization means that each dose is tailored to each individual's tumor genome, based on biomarkers and supported by advanced mutation analysis algorithms.

The difference between Enteromix and other cancer vaccines

Unlike conventional cancer vaccines, which often adopt a “one size fits all” strategy and have limited efficacy, Enteromix offers two important improvements.

First, the design is completely personalized. Each vaccine is built based on the genetic makeup of an individual's tumor, improving target specificity and immune engagement.

The second is the mRNA platform. This allows for rapid development and scalability, something that decades of cancer vaccine efforts have lacked. The mRNA-based approach can also be quickly adapted for different types of cancer.

This combination of personalization and flexibility puts Enteromix at the forefront of therapeutic vaccines, with the potential to overcome long-standing challenges in the field of cancer immunotherapy.

Implications for patients

If Enteromix is approved and endorsed more widely by regulators, the implications could be far-reaching.

For patients globally, switching from broad, harsh treatments to safer, tailored immunotherapies could reduce side effects and improve outcomes.

However, caution is still paramount. Success in early trials does not guarantee long-term efficacy or generalizability. Larger phase II and III trials are needed to truly confirm the vaccine's efficacy in larger patient populations.

The success of the Enteromix cancer vaccine opens up a potential breakthrough in cancer treatment.

The global oncology industry is closely watching this cancer vaccine. If these results are confirmed through large-scale and rigorous trials, Enteromix could usher in a new era: personalized cancer treatment that is effective and has few side effects.
