To help you find the perfect place to visit during your winter break, US News has compiled a list of the best places to visit during the winter. Hopefully, this brief introduction to the destinations below can help you plan your upcoming winter break.

Lucerne (Switzerland)

Whether your ideal winter break involves skiing, relaxing by a fire, or simply enjoying the holiday spirit, Lucerne has you covered. Snow-covered streets, ice skating rinks, and numerous Christmas markets make the city particularly charming. The Lilu Lucerne Light Festival in January helps to keep the festive feeling going. Plus, there are many nearby resorts within easy reach for skiing, snowshoeing, and to top off your perfect holiday, visit one of Lucerne’s many spas for a relaxing getaway.

Honolulu (USA)

Oahu combines cosmopolitan luxury with breathtaking scenery like no other Hawaiian island. The state capital, Honolulu, epitomizes the island’s charm. Nearby, you’ll find plenty of cultural and historical sites, from the ornate Iolani Palace to the austere USS Arizona Memorial at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Nearby, Waikiki is home to resorts with long stretches of white sand. For a taste of rural Hawaii, visit the North Shore, where you’ll find the most brilliant blue water and winding hiking trails.

Oahu is one of Hawaii’s cultural and arts centers. The island hosts numerous music and dance festivals, including the Honolulu Festival and the Aloha Festival. You can also find many expressions of Polynesian and Native Hawaiian culture throughout the island. Be sure to visit the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Kalihi for a deeper look into Native heritage. Also, consider attending a luau, a traditional Hawaiian feast and cultural performance.

Sydney (Australia)

Sydney is both a laid-back coastal city and a thriving metropolis boasting some of the best surfing and activities in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you’re looking to catch a show at the Sydney Opera House, hit the waves at Bondi Beach, or explore trendy areas like The Rocks and Darling Harbour, Sydney has something for everyone. Even Sydneysiders have the perfect blend of both worlds: trendy clothes with a laid-back coastal vibe and a ‘no worries’ attitude.

In addition to its numerous beaches, restaurants and bars, Australia’s most populous city offers a wealth of entertainment. Thrill seekers can climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, while those looking to relax will appreciate a relaxing day at Coogee Beach, Manly Beach or a peaceful stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens. There are also plenty of seasonal festivals and events to enjoy in Sydney. Whether you’re looking to catch a rugby match, visit the city’s museums or relax along the coast, Sydney has you covered.

Maldives

Looking for a romantic winter getaway? Head to the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, where dry weather, temperatures hovering around 150C and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches await. Spend your days sunbathing on the warm sands of luxury resorts, snorkeling among schools of colourful fish and island-hopping on a catamaran… experiences that will make your trip worth the time and money.

Located in the Indian Ocean, about 600 miles southwest of Sri Lanka, the Maldives is virtually isolated – and that’s part of its appeal. The best time to visit is between November and April, when there’s little rain and warm temperatures. The island nation is sunny year-round, but also experiences a dry season and a wet season. While November to April promises the best weather, it’s also the busiest time of year, and resort prices can be expensive. However, because each resort has its own island, you won’t have to deal with the crowds you’d experience during peak season in a more tropical destination with more public facilities.

St. Lucia

St. Lucia’s mild winter weather beckons visitors looking to escape the snow and freezing temperatures. After a day in the sun, sip some of the island’s cacao tea (made from local cacao, spices, water and milk) instead of your typical hot chocolate.

Lush, unspoiled St. Lucia attracts visitors of all types. Some are music lovers, losing themselves at the St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival in the spring. Meanwhile, adrenaline junkies test their limits by climbing The Pitons or ziplining through the rainforests of the Chassin region. Others prefer to relax on the beaches or hide away at one of the island’s secluded resorts.

But what if you don’t fit into any of these categories? Don’t worry, start your morning soaking up the orange-tinged sunrise at Soufrière, then end your evening with a dance party along Gros Islet. To discover the rest of the island’s ineffable charm, you’ll have to visit for yourself.

Costa Rica

For many, Costa Rica’s allure lies in its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife. You can hike to active volcanoes, zipline through cloud-covered rainforests, and surf warm, turquoise waters. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do in this compact yet diverse tropical paradise. Nature seekers will hike through the dense jungle, while beach lovers will lounge on the soft sands.

For others, however, this small Latin American country has another appeal: a laid-back lifestyle. Its residents – known as Ticos – often chant the motto “pura vida” (or “pure life”). This guiding philosophy can be applied from Costa Rica’s cosmopolitan central capital, San José, all the way down to the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Lapland (Finland)

Jack Frost himself couldn’t have dreamed up a better snowy destination than Finnish Lapland. Finland’s Arctic region, with 10 to 20 inches of snow, offers skiing, snowboarding, eSled tours, and reindeer sleigh rides. Get acquainted with Finnish culture by taking a dip in icy rivers and lakes, or visit Rovaniemi, Lapland’s culinary hub, to sample Nordic delicacies. You won’t see much daylight during a winter visit—the sun typically shines for only 2 to 4 hours in December and January. Make the most of those long nights by booking a stay in a glass igloo to watch the northern lights dance above.

Galápagos

Winter in the Galápagos Islands is marked by warm weather and plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing, snorkeling and diving. Plan a visit in December to see giant tortoise hatchlings, waving albatross before they fly away for the season and male marine iguanas flashing their colours to attract females for mating. If you visit in February, you’ll have the chance to attend the Santa Cruz Island Carnival.

With its wild terrain and diverse wildlife – from sea lions to marine lizards – the isolated islands of the Galápagos attract those looking for exciting wildlife encounters. After all, where else can you see giant tortoises grazing, short-haired penguins waddling along the equator or blue-footed boobies performing their unique mating rituals?

In the list of the most attractive winter destinations introduced by Usnews, Hanoi ranked 7th. This news site introduced Hanoi as follows: “The capital of Vietnam has beautiful weather in winter. You will be able to visit top attractions such as the Temple of Literature and enjoy a steaming bowl of pho. A winter visit also offers the opportunity to experience some of Hanoi's best events, such as the Lunar New Year and the Perfume Pagoda Festival”.
