Lao Cai is one of the localities that has quickly completed the goal of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses, providing solid and safe housing for tens of thousands of households. The province has "reached the finish line" of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses more than 2 months ahead of the target assigned by the Prime Minister. To achieve that result, Lao Cai has promoted political determination, implemented many creative methods and mobilized the strength of the entire political system, the business community and the people.

Comrade Sung Thanh Cong - Chairman of Nam Co Commune People's Committee said: "We determined that removing temporary and dilapidated houses is just the first step, the ultimate goal is to help people stabilize their lives and escape poverty sustainably. Commune leaders have directed Party cells, the Fatherland Front, and socio-political organizations to closely follow each village and hamlet, both encouraging their spirit and supporting the connection of preferential loan sources. When people settle down and have determination, combined with the support of the government, poverty reduction will be truly sustainable."

Not only stopping at the joy of having a solid home, many families after being supported to remove temporary and dilapidated houses have turned housing into a driving force to focus on economic development. Since then, many households have risen out of poverty, their lives have become increasingly stable, affirming the sustainable effectiveness of this humane policy.

Mr. Giang A Lo in Ban Cong village, Hanh Phuc commune shared: “My family is a poor household, having lived in a dilapidated house for many years. With the State’s support of 60 million VND to build a new house, my family now has a decent place to live. From now on, my family is determined to escape poverty, raise chickens and pigs, and take on extra jobs to increase income and stabilize life.”

In Nheo village, Chau Que commune, Mr. Trieu Van Giang has built a spacious house, more than 70 square meters wide thanks to the support of 60 million VND from the State. Mr. Giang shared: "As a family with extremely difficult circumstances, I myself have acute pancreatitis, often have to go to the hospital, but I always try to overcome. In particular, after having a solid house, my family was supported by the local government to access loans from the Social Policy Bank to develop the forest economy, to escape poverty.

"I am very excited and will try to work and produce to make life better and better."

Mr. Trieu Van Giang shared.

As a particularly difficult commune of Lao Cai province, the economic picture of Chau Que commune has improved after many families received support to build solid houses.

Chairman of Chau Que Commune People's Committee Le Quang Dao said: "From the beginning of 2025, with the participation of the entire political system, Chau Que Commune has had many ways suitable to the actual conditions to propagate and mobilize poor households to seize opportunities and take advantage of State support funds to build and repair houses. Accordingly, the whole commune has supported 26 houses, including 21 new houses and 5 repaired houses with a total cost of over 1.4 billion VND. Most households after receiving housing support have made efforts to rise up, develop the economy and escape poverty."

“The housing support policy does not only stop at material value, but has become a spiritual push, arousing changes in people's awareness. From waiting and relying, many households have turned to being proactive and self-reliant. This is the core value, the most sustainable in the poverty reduction process” - Chairman of Chau Que Commune People's Committee affirmed.

In recent years, Lao Cai province has paid special attention to sustainable poverty reduction, especially in eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses, supporting the construction of houses for families of people with revolutionary contributions and martyrs' relatives; poor households, near-poor households; households affected by natural disasters, storms and floods. Implementing the Prime Minister's direction and responding to the emulation movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses" nationwide, since September 2024, Lao Cai province has carefully reviewed the needs and developed a project to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses with the goal of supporting the construction of nearly 13,000 houses with a total cost of about 663 billion VND.

Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Xuan Truong affirmed: “The program and emulation movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide launched by the Prime Minister is an unprecedented large-scale social security program, a special project that is very popular with the people, strengthens the people's trust in the Party and State, arouses the people's strength, and is a fulcrum of compatriotism and solidarity among the people.

Although there are still many difficulties, especially the impact of storm No. 3 in 2024, with the determination of the entire political system, the participation of all levels, branches, organizations, businesses and people in the province, by June 15, 2025, the whole province has completed supporting 100% of houses according to the Project - 2 months earlier than the Project's plan target and is one of the localities in the country to soon complete the Project's target.

In reality, once they have a stable place to live, people not only focus on developing their family economy but also actively participate in community movements such as contributing labor and money to build concrete roads, repair cultural houses, and build new rural areas. That is an important foundation to strengthen the great solidarity bloc, improve people's lives and realize the goal of sustainable poverty reduction.
