Studying in fear in a room 'waiting to collapse'

Many classrooms at the Mo Duc Vocational Education - Continuing Education Center's second facility (Quang Ngai) have seriously degraded after nearly 30 years of use, causing parents and students to feel nervous every time they go to class.

Mo Duc Vocational Education - Continuing Education Center (abbreviated as the center) currently has 2 campuses, with about 20 classrooms serving 647 students in grades 10, 11 and 12. Of which, the main campus is located in Mo Duc commune, and campus 2 is located in Long Phung commune, with 4 classrooms (2 classrooms were built in 1995, the remaining 2 classrooms were put into use in 2019).

On September 24, according to the reporter at the second facility, the classrooms built in 1995 were severely damaged. The walls were cracked, the windows had broken hinges, many porch pillars had long cracks, and rust was visible. Some rooms only had half of the window panels left, the roof tiles were eaten by termites, and long termite nests appeared along the walls. Inside, the floor and ceiling were also cracked, with many peeling off.

A manager at the second facility said that teachers and staff have temporarily patched up the cement walls themselves because they do not have the funds to repair them. "Whenever it rains and is windy, teaching and learning becomes extremely difficult. Students sit in class and are still worried that the walls and roofs might collapse," he said.

Mr. Nguyen Ke Hau, Director of the Center, said: "Due to the serious degradation, the center has temporarily stopped arranging for 80 10th grade students to study in these two rooms, switching to combined learning in the remaining two newly built rooms in 2019. This solution is only a temporary solution, because the current number of classrooms cannot meet the needs of nearly 650 students."

The center's main facility also has many degraded functional rooms. Mr. Hau said that since 2022, the center has repeatedly submitted requests to the People's Committee of Mo Duc District (before the merger) and the Department of Finance and Planning to request funding for repairs, but has not yet been approved.

Regarding this issue, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thai, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Ngai province, said: "The Department has just received the center for a few months now. We have sent documents to the affiliated educational institutions to review and make statistics on the facilities. When there is a specific report, the Department will synthesize and advise the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province to arrange funding."
