In a report released by the US Department of Justice today (January 14), special prosecutor Jack Smith, who has now resigned, concluded that President-elect Donald Trump engaged in 'an unprecedented criminal effort' to cling to power after his defeat in the 2020 election.

The report details special counsel Jack Smith's decision to issue a four-count indictment against Trump, charging him with conspiring to obstruct the collection and certification of votes after losing the 2020 election to Joe Biden.

According to the prosecutor, the evidence gathered was enough to prosecute Mr. Trump in court, but Mr. Trump's victory on election day November 5, 2024 turned everything upside down.

Mr. Smith also defended the investigation and the team of prosecutors working with him.

"It is ridiculous for Mr. Trump to accuse my decisions - in my role as prosecutor - of being influenced or directed by the Joe Biden administration or other political factors," AFP quoted Mr. Smith's letter about the above report.

After the US Department of Justice released the report, President-elect Trump on the social network Truth Social called Mr. Smith "an ignorant prosecutor who couldn't bring the case to court before election day."

Much of the evidence referred to in the report has been previously made public.

For example, part two of the report documents allegations that Mr. Trump acted illegally by retaining sensitive national security documents after leaving the White House in 2021.

Mr. Smith dropped his prosecution of Mr. Trump in both cases, and left the Justice Department because of its longstanding policy of not indicting a sitting president.
