Bitter mistakes that anyone can easily make

In 2017, I was still working at the old company for 9 years, with total income including salary and bonus of about 300,000 NDT/year (~1 billion VND).

As many people say, only people with good lives like to attend class reunions. It's true that I didn't want to attend class reunions before.

Besides the busy work factor and often working away from home, another reason is because I feel I'm not good enough.

However, before Labor Day that year, I accepted the class president's invitation to attend the reunion. Because I thought my life was good enough now, that I could share it with everyone.

Talking about my job, at that time I felt I was receiving good treatment from the company. Not only did I have a high income but the company also created conditions for me to study more.

However, I had a grievance with this job. That was the company forced me to change jobs, from project engineer to equipment operation and maintenance department. When I was transferred, I thought that the company did not respect me.

But I didn’t expect that this thought would be the start of a series of mistakes for me. At that time, the company’s business was going down, so the superiors had to consider laying off staff. My project engineering department was one of the units being considered for staff reduction.

At that time, the bosses thought that the operation and maintenance department always went along with the development of the company. Therefore, the decision to transfer me to the new department was to keep me away from the company. But unfortunately, my vision at that time did not see this problem.

At that time, I was only 31 years old and I was confident that I could do anything if I just tried hard. It was my self-aggrandizement and dissatisfaction with the company that made me delusional. From then on, I cherished the thought that if I just left my current company, I would definitely do better.

Back to the reunion, it was our 10th anniversary of graduating. Unlike the complaints about reunions online, my friends were all over 30, had families, were in control of their emotions, and were considerate of others’ feelings.

No one is deliberately showing off or making fun of their classmates. However, I understand that although they appear kind and gentle on the outside, they cannot help but secretly compare themselves.

Also because of the desire to assert myself, I shared about my job and salary with many classmates.

In return for their compliments, I think I'm more capable and deserve a better life.

A while later, when I was on the terrace, I met Li Xun. After chatting for a while, Li Xun told me that his family had just opened a factory. He wanted to invite me to become an employee of the factory, with a salary of no less than 500,000 yuan/year (1.75 billion VND).

Li Xun is a classmate with a net worth of hundreds of millions of yuan. He is the closest person to me in university.

According to what he shared, after we graduated, he took over the business from his father. His father was a professor, the head of many leading scientific research projects in the country.

During our four years in college, Li Xun and I visited his father’s research institute many times. His family had a very strong network of connections in Nanjing. His grandfather was the director of a large hospital, and his grandfather was a retired military officer.

Having such a great classmate like Li Xun, I was very excited after he invited me to collaborate on his project. However, I have been working for more than 10 years, so I couldn't immediately accept his offer.

Seeing that I was still hesitant, after the party, he took me on a tour of the factory, which made me trust Li Huan even more. In addition, my growing dissatisfaction with my current company made me agree to work with Li Huan.

However, the price was too high. Just one month after I started working at the new company, my situation suddenly changed. First, due to the land replanting policy, the factory had to relocate its production workshop. Then, due to the company's supplier price increase, the profit from production decreased. Just two months after moving to the new company, I became unemployed and did not receive my full salary.

And in an effort to move up to the new company, I completely quit my old company. That is why even if I asked to return to the old company now, the management would not accept it.

From a job with a salary of 300,000 RMB/year, I was unemployed for a year. Now, when I look for a job, because I am over 30 years old, there are not many job opportunities left. I can only find a job with a salary of 5,000 RMB/month (~17.5 million VND), while still having to shoulder the mortgage debt and a family to take care of.

When I think about the past, I always blame myself for being a frog in a well. I only want to increase my own value without looking at the reality around me. When your life is good, self-exaltation is the most taboo thing. When you are complacent and think that glory and wealth are within your reach, danger is not far from you.
