After a year of strong El Nino impacts, the world may witness the formation of La Nina in the second half of 2024, bringing unusually cold temperatures in the Pacific Ocean , according to a new forecast from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) of the US National Weather Service (NWS).

According to the CPC, the El Nino phenomenon, which brings hot, dry weather in Asia and unusually heavy rains in many parts of the Americas, will end in the first half of 2024, and weather conditions will become more neutral from April to June. After that, there is about a 55% chance of La Nina appearing from June to August. Normally, when La Nina appears, countries in Southeast Asia, Australia and India will see more rain and snow while the weather in the grain and oilseed growing regions of the Americas will be drier.

CPC pointed out that although forecasts made in the spring are less accurate, in the past, there have been times when La Nina appeared after a strong El Nino ended. According to expert Sabrin Chowdhury, head of consumer goods analysis at BMI, La Nina could affect wheat and corn production in the US, soybeans and corn in Latin America, including Brazil. Previously, in 2023, India, the world's largest rice supplier, restricted rice exports after production decreased due to the impact of the monsoon phenomenon. Meanwhile, palm and rice growing countries in Southeast Asia also received lower than usual rainfall.

An expert from the India Meteorological Department assessed that if La Nina appears in combination with the monsoon, it will be beneficial for agricultural activities, the monsoon will bring significant rainfall during the La Nina period. The monsoon, which lasts from June to September, plays an important role in the Indian economy , bringing nearly 70% of the rainfall in this agricultural country.
