According to Neowin , Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise has not had a good relationship with Xbox for many years, and the release schedule for this game platform has been virtually zero. But things will be different next year.
Accordingly, Xbox head Phil Spencer made a surprise appearance on stage at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival with game director Naoki Yoshida, to announce that the hit MMORPG of 2010 will officially be available on the Xbox system.
Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Xbox
Final Fantasy XIV is currently available on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. A release for Xbox consoles was made previously in 2019 with A Realm Reborn, but this is the first time a game's release window has been exclusive to Xbox.
The upcoming Final Fantasy game will be available on both Xbox Series X and S, and will support cross-play with other platforms. Xbox Series X will support 4K MMO gameplay, while both X and S will support faster loading times than previous-generation platforms.
The Xbox version of Final Fantasy XIV will release in spring 2024. A free online expansion trial for Final Fantasy XIV will also come to Xbox, with unrestricted access to A Realm Reborn, as well as the Heavensward and Stormblood expansions, which will be available for free up to level 70.
On stage, Spencer called this a "significant moment" in the partnership between Xbox and Square Enix's Final Fantasy development teams. He added that the companies are looking to collaborate more in the future. This could hint at Final Fantasy games that have never been released on Xbox before.
