School is like a miniature society with many complex factors that affect students' psychology. Just entering her first year, Tran Phuong Dung, a student at the Foreign Trade University in Ho Chi Minh City, confided: "During my high school years, I was shunned by my classmates just because of my unattractive appearance. Now, when I enter university, a new environment, I still feel self-conscious and do not have enough courage to get to know people around me."
Dung said that despite her negative past that left her with many traumas, the female student is still trying every day to break out of her comfort zone.
As a student transferring from Japanese studies to journalism, Dang Nguyen Thanh Truc (student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) encountered many difficulties when getting acquainted with new classmates. "Because I entered the class later, at first I was quite shy when I saw that everyone in the class had known each other before. Every day I went to school, I usually sat in a corner of the table at the back of the class, with no one to talk to and do homework with, which made me feel very discouraged," Truc confided.
Students should prepare themselves mentally in advance to have a less awkward reception when entering university.
The most stressful thing for a female student is finding a group to do homework. Because most of her friends already have a group and are quite hesitant to accept a new person into the group. Gradually, this made her think about quitting school.
Being introverted is also a weakness in Truc's communication. Self-proclaimed as a sociable person, the female student is very happy when someone comes to talk to her. "However, I rarely take the initiative to talk to strangers. I am trying every day to improve that," Truc hopes.
Consider university as a second home
However, not everyone falls into a "nightmare" state when entering the university gate. Many students consider this a second home where they can "let loose" and live as their truest selves.
"The biggest motivation for me to ride my motorbike more than 15 km every day is to meet my university friends. If one day I don't talk to them, I will feel suffocated and uncomfortable!", Khanh Linh (student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) shared. This is probably the common reason why most students like to go to school.
Khanh Linh does media work in an event organized by the class.
Linh said that at home, she usually only has her grandparents and parents, but at school it's different. Linh is lucky to have found friends who can understand and share everything in life. Playing with friends who "match her taste", Khanh Linh sometimes forgets that she is a third-year student and is about to enter the real world to "fight".
Not only finding joy from friends, the university environment is also the cradle that produces many talents through extracurricular activities such as clubs, teams and volunteer campaigns.
For example, Ly Ai My (3rd year journalism student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City - Head of the REC Media Club) could not hide her happiness when she and the club raised a large amount of money to organize the program "Lighting up the Highlands", helping the disadvantaged in remote areas.
In addition, school activities not only give students unforgettable experiences but also train them in necessary soft skills such as public speaking, communication or teamwork... which are very practical for the future. For Ai My, every day at school is a different joy. Going to school helps My become more active, meet many new friends and most importantly, My has memorable memories in her student life.
Practice positive thinking
Master of Psychology Dang Hoang An (former lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) said that acceptance of a new environment depends on many factors.
"The brain structure determines each person's personality. Extroverts are more adaptable. Meanwhile, introverts and quiet people will have more difficulty integrating into the new environment," Mr. An shared. In addition, external factors such as changes in routine, new lifestyle and new friends are also barriers that students often encounter when entering university.
According to Mr. An, students should prepare themselves mentally in advance to have a less awkward reception. "Change your perception, don't put pressure on yourself, think that any environment is an environment for you to learn knowledge and culture from your friends and teachers. From there, accumulate knowledge as luggage to step out into society," Mr. An advised. In particular, a positive attitude is an important quality that needs to be cultivated.
Integration is not a one-day or two-day story, but a long journey that requires the support of family and school, according to Master Hoang An. Schools should not let students "swim" in a sea of information, but should create clear and specific information and guidance. At the same time, students should learn about their strengths and weaknesses to join the right clubs and experiential activities that they love.
