US warship attacked in Red Sea

According to a social media announcement, a Houthi spokesman said they had launched an "attack operation against two Israeli ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait", a strategic shipping route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

The Houthis said the attack was carried out to "deal with" Israeli naval vessels participating in the military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

The spokesman identified the two Israeli naval vessels as the Unity Explorer and the Number Nine, which were attacked by missiles and armed drones, respectively.

While Israel has not yet responded to the above information, AP news agency quoted an announcement from the Pentagon that a US warship and many commercial ships were being attacked in the Red Sea.

USS Carney

"We are aware of the attacks on the USS Carney and merchant vessels in the Red Sea and will provide more information as soon as possible," the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon said the USS Carney received a distress signal from a Bahamas-flagged cargo ship and went to its assistance.

Hours earlier, the British military said there had been a drone attack and explosions in the Red Sea, but gave no details.

The attack, if confirmed, would mark a major escalation in maritime attacks in the Middle East related to the Hamas-Israel conflict, according to the Pentagon.

On November 29, USNI News reported that the destroyer USS Carney shot down a missile launched by Houthi forces toward the Red Sea.
