Tencent will initially test the Hunyuan AI model for advertising and fintech. The company will also introduce an AI chatbot at the event.

Tencent will integrate Hunyuan's capabilities with its existing video conferencing and social networking products, said Dowson Tong, CEO of Tencent's cloud and smart industry division.
Baidu and several other Chinese companies have previously been given the green light to make AI chatbots available to the public. Similar to ChatGPT, chatbots can answer questions like humans, but mostly in Chinese. Some chatbots, like Baidu’s Ernie, can also convert text into images and videos with the help of plugins.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is not yet officially available in China. The chatbot must comply with the country’s new rules on generative AI, which came into effect on August 15. When asked about the rules, Tencent’s cloud and smart industry CEO Tong pointed out that AI is so new that no one knows yet what impact it will have on society.
The temporary rule does not apply to companies developing AI that have not yet been released, according to the authorities. It is more flexible than the April 2023 draft, which required all parties to comply at any stage.
Despite Beijing’s support for generative AI, domestic companies face a ban on buying high-end U.S. semiconductors. Current versions of cutting-edge GPUs help companies train AI models, which will hamper their progress and growth, Tong said.

To mitigate the shortage, companies are focusing on specific use cases and building appropriate models. He also expects GPU computing supply to increase in the coming months, which will accelerate development.
Tencent is just one of many tech companies in China racing to introduce AI products this year. Alibaba also announced in August 2023 that it would open its own AI model to third-party developers. AI requires industry-specific training to create value, such as tourism , public services, finance, and customer care.
