Immediately after the Ministry of Education and Training issued the regulations on admission to secondary and high schools, Ho Chi Minh City was the first locality to announce the third exam subject, the chosen subject being English. Meanwhile, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that it would take more time to research, consider and submit to the City People's Committee a decision on the third exam subject as well as the admission plan for grade 10 next school year.

The Ministry of Education and Training has also recently sent a document to the Departments of Education and Training, requesting organizations to select and soon announce the third subject or exam for grade 10 according to regulations to facilitate students in completing the program and reviewing, preparing well for the conditions, creating a mindset ready to take the exam and achieve good results.

The regulations on admission to junior high school and high school issued together with Circular No. 30 issued on December 30, 2024 by the Minister of Education and Training, the entrance exam method for grade 10 high school includes 3 subjects and tests. Of which, two fixed subjects are math and literature and a third subject or test is selected by the Department of Education and Training.

Notably, according to the regulations, the third exam subject is selected from among the subjects that are evaluated by scores in the general education program at the secondary level, ensuring that the same third exam subject is not selected for more than 3 consecutive years. The third exam subject or the combined exam of a number of subjects is announced after the end of the first semester but no later than March 31 every year.
