Attracting the world's top scientific talents to Vietnam

Many great scientists in the world, including Nobel Prize winners and many other prestigious awards, have come to Vietnam to learn about the academic environment and share knowledge and scientific research experience with the Vietnamese scientific intellectual community.

Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, a locality located in the sunny and windy Central region of Vietnam. Nearly 20 years ago, no one thought that this place would welcome thousands of famous scientists, Nobel Prize winners, from which, the first scientific discovery center of the country was formed.

Talking about the journey of the Rencontres du Vietnam and the 10 years of operation of the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), Professor of Physics of Vietnamese origin Tran Thanh Van, the initiator and dedicated person to these two organizations, said: Rencontres du Vietnam is a non-governmental organization, operating non-profit, established under the Law on Associations 1901 in France since 1993, based on the experience and success recognized and highly appreciated by the international scientific community of the Rencontres du Moriond (57 years, since 1966) and Rencontres du Blois (34 years, since 1989). The main purpose of Rencontres du Vietnam is to connect cooperation, support, and help to contribute to the development of science and higher education in Vietnam. In 2012, the Association became an official partner of UNESCO.

By 2023, the Rencontres du Vietnam, the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education in collaboration with the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province had organized nearly 150 high-quality international scientific conferences and more than 45 specialized science schools with the participation of nearly 10,000 scientists from 35 countries and territories. Among them are 18 Nobel Prize-winning professors, 2 Fields Prize-winning professors (considered the Nobel Prize of Mathematics), 2 Kavli Prize-winning professors (the highest award in the field of Astronomy), 1 Shaw Prize-winning professor (considered the Eastern Nobel Prize), 3 Dirac Prize-winning professors, 1 Kalinga Prize-winning professor (ONU) and many other famous scientists... Along with that, the Association organized public scientific presentations for students, students and the public who love science; Interact online or in person with Nobel Prize-winning professors and outstanding Vietnamese students who won international Olympic prizes...

Scientific events held at the Center also attracted thousands of famous and prestigious international scientists to attend. Thanks to the Center's effective operations and investment attraction policies, and attention to scientific development in Binh Dinh, FPT Corporation and TMA Solutions Company, the leading software companies in Vietnam, have decided to invest in Binh Dinh province.

Up to now, the opportunity to connect the world's leading scientists with Vietnamese scientists, young people, and students passionate about scientific research through the Rencontres du Vietnam and the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education continues. The flow of world science still flows into the flow of Vietnamese science, so that love and faith in science, research, application, and technology continue to flow in generations of Vietnamese people.

Narrowing the gap with the world

One direction to update the flow of scientific research and application of modern technology is the VinFuture Award - the first global Science and Technology Award initiated by Vietnamese people and one of the most valuable annual awards in the world. VinFuture is currently entering its 4th season with nearly 1,500 nominations from more than 80 countries and territories, and more than 9,000 scientists becoming nomination partners.

Professor Sir Richard Henry Friend, Chairman of the VinFuture Prize Council, assessed that the prestige and appeal of Vietnam on the global science map is increasingly clear. The VinFuture Prize has attracted attention from many places, welcoming scientists to Vietnam. In the first season, Dr. Katalin Karikó and Professor Drew Weissman - two scientists who won the VinFuture Prize for their research to help develop the mRNA vaccine to prevent COVID-19, were present in Hanoi. Two years after being honored, they continued to be awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The other two winners of the VinFuture Special Prize season 2 (2022), Dr. Demis Hassabis and Dr. John Jumper, have just won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

In 2024, the group of authors who were honored with the VinFuture 2023 Special Prize for Scientists researching new fields, namely Professor Daniel Joshua Drucker (Canada), Professor Joel Francis Habener (USA), Professor Jens Juul Holst (Denmark) and Associate Professor Svetlana Mojsov (USA), were respectively honored by Time Magazine in the list of 100 most influential people in the world and in the list of 100 most influential people in the field of health. They also continued to be honored with many other prestigious international awards this year such as the Tang Prize, Lasker Awards, etc.

“All of the above scientists have come to Hanoi and interacted with the Vietnamese scientific community and students. That is truly inspiring, proving that Vietnam is also gradually becoming one of the destinations attracting the world's leading scientific talents,” said Professor Sir. Richard Henry Friend.

Professor Rachid Yazami, battery technology expert and VinFuture 2023 Grand Prize Winner, believes that Vietnam can do what other countries have not been able to do, because it has excellent scientists, good technology experts, talented engineers, along with a potential market. In particular, the gap between Vietnamese science and technology and the world is narrowing day by day thanks to bridges like VinFutures. This facilitates the rapid and effective deployment of new technology, contributing to promoting sustainable development not only for Vietnam but also for the world.
