Quynh Vinh Commune is located in the West of Hoang Mai Town (Nghe An). This place is considered the "capital" of raising deer and antlers, the largest in the province, with a total herd of more than 1,800 animals. Deer and antlers have existed for a long time and are becoming a strongly developing industry, bringing in billions of dong in profits for local people here. |
At this time, people in Hoang Mai are harvesting deer antlers. The price of antlers is stable at a high level of 10-11 million VND/kg, helping local people have a large source of income. |
As one of the households that has been raising deer for a long time in Quynh Vinh commune, Mr. Le Cong Hiep (born in 1981, residing in Hamlet 22, Quynh Vinh commune) currently has 3 farms with more than 50 deer. Mr. Hiep said that raising deer is not too labor-intensive, as long as the breeder understands the antler growth cycle of the deer, it is easy to raise them. Meanwhile, the food source for deer is easy to find, easy to grow and does not cost much. |
"As long as you understand the biological characteristics of deer, take proper care and provide proper nutrition during the antlers (antlers) period, deer will give high income and be less susceptible to diseases. With favorable natural conditions, abundant food sources for deer such as grass, banana trees, and leaves in the garden, people do not have to worry about the cost of feeding the deer," said Mr. Hiep. Mr. Hiep's farms are built under rows of jackfruit trees, creating a cool atmosphere in the summer and warm in the winter. Not only that, jackfruit leaves are also a source of food for deer. |
"Especially when deer and elk have antlers, we have to pay attention to adding corn and starches to ensure nutrition for deer and elk," Mr. Hiep shared his personal experience. |

In Mr. Hiep’s herd of 50 deer, there are currently 15 males that continuously produce antlers every year. In addition, the female deer herd gives birth regularly, so Mr. Hiep has a large additional source of income from selling breeding animals. |
Male deer can be sold for 20-40 million VND/deer. Female deer can be sold for about 15 million VND/deer. Each year, Mr. Hiep earns hundreds of millions of VND from selling deer. |
There is also a large farm, Mr. Nguyen Van Bay (born in 1979, residing in Quynh Vinh commune) said, in addition to male deer for antlers, raising female deer for breeding will bring in a large income as baby deer are always sought after by households and farms. |
With a herd of 30 deer that reproduce stably every year on the farm, Mr. Bay estimates he earns more than 500 million VND each year from selling breeding deer. |
Thanks to the stable output and large income, people here have boldly expanded their farming scale. For example, Mr. Nguyen Ba Thang (resident of Quynh Thien ward, Hoang Mai town) spent more than 6 billion VND in Quynh Vinh commune to build a deer farm. |
Currently, Mr. Thang's farm has more than 150 deer. |
Mr. Thang invested in a modern and systematic farm with a cooling fan system and a humidity meter. The farm owner also installed cameras to monitor and promptly handle any unexpected incidents that may occur with his valuable deer herd. |
In each cage, Mr. Thang records all the information of the deer he is raising, from the origin, the date he started raising them to the day they were cut. According to Mr. Thang, recording will help him take better care of his deer herd. |
Deer's main food is grass, so Mr. Thang hired more people to plant trees and harvest them every day to process into food. |

"The deer herd on the farm is growing well, the male deer are preparing for antlers and the female deer are starting to reproduce," said Mr. Thang, who believes that raising deer will bring good income to the people. |
Deer velvet is the young horn of a male deer that has just grown, not yet calcified or hardened.
In traditional medicine, deer antlers are a precious medicinal herb with uses such as good for bones and joints, good for digestion, helping to relax the mind, supporting increased muscle strength and many other effects. Deer antlers are also considered a panacea.
