Ms Borne's move comes as French President Emmanuel Macron seeks to inject fresh momentum into his second term ahead of European Parliament elections and the Paris Olympics next summer.

President Macron sparked speculation of a government reshuffle last December by promising a new political initiative, after France was hit by political crises following controversial pension and immigration reforms in 2023.

Ms. Borne, 62 years old, was appointed in May 2022, the second female Prime Minister in French history, and will continue to be in charge of related work until a new government is formed.

AFP news agency reported that a source close to President Macron revealed that the leader received Ms. Borne's application and appointed a new Prime Minister on the morning of January 9 (local time).

Mr Macron also posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Ms Borne's work was “exemplary every day”.

The French President's office did not name a successor, however, AFP said Education Minister Gabriel Attal, 34, has emerged as a candidate to succeed Ms. Borne.
