Children are repeatedly attacked by dogs, doctors warn of vigilance
On August 11, the City Children's Hospital (HCMC) announced that it had just treated the case of a child patient named MQN (3 years old, male, residing in Dong Thap) who was bitten by a dog in the nape of his neck.
Medical history showed that 12 hours before admission, N. was playing in the house but did not know that a dog was sleeping nearby. The dog thought the child was attacking, so it jumped up and bit the right side of the neck and nape, causing a lot of bleeding.
The family discovered the child and immediately took him to the local hospital for first aid overnight, then transferred him to the City Children's Hospital.
Here, the patient was given wound hemostasis, anti-rabies serum, rabies vaccine according to the schedule, tetanus serum, antibiotics, pain relievers, and wound cleaning. After 3 days of treatment, N.'s condition gradually improved, and the rabies vaccine schedule continued.
About a month ago, this hospital also received emergency treatment for a 5-year-old boy who was bitten by a dog and suffered dozens of deep, complex wounds to his head, face, neck, cheeks, and eyes, requiring about 20 stitches.
Through the above cases, doctors recommend that parents should educate children not to tease, joke or play around in front of dogs to avoid being attacked, causing injury and the risk of rabies infection.
If a child is bitten by a dog - even if it is a small wound - he or she should be taken to a medical facility immediately for wound treatment and rabies vaccination instructions.
