US Supreme Court fears AI interfering with the judicial system

In his annual report, US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts expressed concerns about the growing presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the US judicial system.

According to CNN, Mr. John Roberts warned that this emerging technology could risk "dehumanizing the law" and endanger fair treatment in the judicial system.

AI clearly has great potential to dramatically increase access to vital information for both lawyers and non-lawyers, he said, at the risk of invading privacy interests and dehumanizing the law.

Chief Justice John Roberts devoted much of his 13-page year-end report, released on December 31, 2023, to how new technology has brought positive change to the federal court system over the years. However, Roberts avoided mentioning that the court has recently been embroiled in two major disputes involving former President Donald Trump, as well as ethics and transparency issues that have plagued the court throughout the year, prompting the nine justices to publish a new code of conduct.

Instead, he presented AI as “a major issue that concerns the entire federal court system” that “requires caution and humility.” Mr. Roberts acknowledged that AI could help make the courts more accessible, especially for those who do not have the resources to hire a lawyer.
