On the morning of September 17, at the Ministry of National Defense Headquarters (Hanoi), General Nguyen Tan Cuong presided over the welcoming ceremony for the Commander of the Royal Brunei Army and members of the delegation.
Emphasizing that this visit takes place in the context of increasingly strengthened bilateral relations between Vietnam and Brunei, General Nguyen Tan Cuong expressed his belief that the two sides will reach a common understanding after the talks, contributing to the increasingly substantial and effective development of cooperation between the two countries' armies.
At the talks, the two sides discussed the world and regional situation and issues of mutual concern. The Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army expressed his delight at the results of military and defense cooperation between the two countries in recent times, notably in areas such as: Exchange of delegations at all levels; consultation mechanisms between the two countries' navies and air forces; sending ships to visit, exchange and share expertise; training; consultation and mutual support at multilateral forums, especially ASEAN-led mechanisms and international events organized by each side.
General Nguyen Tan Cuong emphasized the important role of ASEAN in shaping and maintaining the regional security structure, promoting substantive cooperation among member countries, as well as between ASEAN and its partners; at the same time, he highly appreciated the strategic document "ADMM and ADMM+ ready for the future" developed by Brunei and Singapore, which was approved by the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) in 2024, and the initiative "Underwater Critical Infrastructure Security" jointly proposed by Brunei, Singapore and Thailand in 2025.
Regarding the situation in the East Sea, the Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army hopes that Brunei will continue to coordinate to promote ASEAN's stance of resolving all disagreements in the East Sea by peaceful means, in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); effectively and fully implementing international and regional commitments such as the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC); and soon concluding negotiations and signing an effective and efficient Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC) in accordance with international law.
On this occasion, General Nguyen Tan Cuong thanked Brunei for sending a high-ranking delegation led by the second Minister of National Defense to attend the 80th Anniversary of the Vietnam People's Army and the second Vietnam International Defense Exhibition in December 2024.
In the coming time, the Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army suggested that the two sides continue to coordinate to effectively implement a number of contents: Maintain the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level delegations and cooperation mechanisms such as consultations between military services and the Joint Working Group on military and defense cooperation; promote training cooperation; expand cooperation in potential areas such as defense industry, logistics, military medicine, search and rescue, counter-terrorism, and cyber security; continue to closely consult and support each other at multilateral mechanisms, forums and international events organized by each side.
Thanking the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and General Nguyen Tan Cuong personally for their thoughtful reception, Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Muhammad Haszaimi Bin Bol Hassan expressed his belief that the delegation's visit to Vietnam this time will be a great success.
According to the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, at the ASEAN Defense Forces Commanders' Conference in Malaysia in September 2025, he and Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army Nguyen Tan Cuong met and discussed many issues on the defense relations between the two countries. The Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces expressed his impression of the visit to Vietnam and the first Vietnam International Defense Exhibition in 2022, when he met and discussed with many Vietnamese and ASEAN partners; and also watched Vietnam's performances at the exhibition.
Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Muhammad Haszaimi Bin Bol Hassan also sent his congratulations on the successful 80th Anniversary of the August Revolution and the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on September 2, thereby clearly demonstrating Vietnam's position in the international arena.
Expressing agreement with the contents that General Nguyen Tan Cuong mentioned at the talks, the Commander of the Royal Brunei Army said that the two sides can study and develop new areas of cooperation in which both sides have potential and need, contributing to further promoting the cooperative relationship between the two countries in the coming time.
