Intussusception due to "dangerous" tumor

On September 3, a representative of Thu Duc General Hospital (HCMC) said that recently, doctors here successfully treated a complicated case of intussusception caused by a dangerous tumor.

Patient NTL (58 years old, residing in Hiep Binh ward, Ho Chi Minh City) was admitted to the hospital with right iliac fossa pain lasting 3 weeks, accompanied by diarrhea. Through endoscopy at a clinic, the doctor discovered a large polyp (4x5cm) in the cecum area and many small polyps scattered in the colon.

Dr. Do Hong Phong, Department of General Surgery, Thu Duc General Hospital, said that the abdominal CT scan results showed that the patient had intussusception of the right ileum-colon segment, due to a tumor in the cecum area. This is a dangerous complication that requires laparoscopic surgery to remove the right colon for emergency treatment.

"The 2-hour surgery went smoothly. We discovered a polyp-like mass in the cecum that had caused intussusception, along with several polyps in the right colon and transverse colon. All lesions were removed and sent for pathology to assess the risk of cancer," Dr. Phong added.

After 7 days of surgery, the patient recovered well, could eat porridge, had soft stools, dry surgical wound, and had normal movement, so he was considered for discharge and instructed to return for a follow-up visit to monitor the results of the pathology and plan further treatment.

According to experts, early warning signs of colorectal disease include prolonged digestive disorders, changes in bowel habits, dull abdominal pain and unexplained anemia.

To prevent colorectal disease, people should have regular screening from the age of 45 or earlier if there are high risk factors; maintain a diet rich in fiber, limit red meat and processed foods; exercise regularly, maintain a reasonable weight; limit alcohol and do not smoke.

Skull base tumors that cause facial deformity

Previously, Binh Duong General Hospital (HCMC) performed surgery to remove a giant frontal cartilage tumor in a female Mong patient.

The patient, Ms. GTS, discovered the tumor at the age of 7, but due to the family's difficult economic conditions, she was not examined and treated promptly. The tumor started at the top of the forehead, gradually spread down the face, invaded the left eye socket and caused facial deformity.

Ms. S. has suffered from this tumor for the past 15 years, causing severe facial deformity and greatly affecting her life. In mid-August, with support from benefactors, the woman was taken to Binh Duong General Hospital.

Through clinical examination, doctors recorded a 25x35cm tumor fixed to the skull bone, immobile, with chronic inflammation of the outer skin layer. CT-Scan and MRI results combined with pathological anatomy determined that this was a benign but overgrown skull cartilage tumor in the frontal region.

Realizing the complicated situation, Binh Duong General Hospital organized interdisciplinary consultations to find the best and safest solution.

Primary and preventive treatment plans are established to ensure absolute safety, with the goal of completely removing the tumor, preserving maximum function, ensuring aesthetics and complying with the patient's religious wishes.

The surgery was performed on the morning of August 28, with the participation of 6 surgeons and 3 anesthesiologists. The doctors removed the damaged skin layer outside the tumor, exposed and removed the bone tumor up to the skull, reconstructed the roof of the left eye socket and used a local skin flap to cover the incision.

The entire surgical process was effectively controlled to stop bleeding. After 7 hours of tension, the surgery was successful. 3 days after surgery, the patient recovered well, vital signs were stable, and he was able to move gently.

In particular, after completely removing the giant tumor, the patient's face improved significantly.
