South Korea's K9 self-propelled artillery fires during a military exercise in response to North Korea on January 5.

The shells were fired from the southwestern coastal area of North Korea between 4 and 5 p.m. local time, Yonhap news agency reported, citing a statement from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

Earlier, on January 5, North Korea suddenly fired about 200 artillery shells near the two outpost islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong of South Korea. The South Korean government immediately evacuated residents on these islands while the country's military also organized live-fire drills in response.

The JCS urged North Korea to stop actions that threaten peace and escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea also warned of taking action if North Korea continued to threaten, although it did not specify what it would do.

South Korean military officials have said there are no plans for live-fire drills in response to the January 5 drill. South Korean troops earlier fired double the number of shells that North Korea fired into the maritime buffer zone between the two Koreas.

After the tit-for-tat exchange on January 5, the North Korean military said the drills were a “natural response” to recent South Korean artillery fire, and vowed to respond with unprecedented force. Pyongyang also said its drills had no impact on the islands in the border area.
