In the context of a number of epidemics appearing in livestock and unfavorable weather conditions, localities in Ha Tinh are focusing on checking the total herd and speeding up the progress of additional vaccination to ensure the safety of livestock and poultry.
To date, African swine fever (ASF) has occurred in 30 households in 6 communes of Cam Xuyen, Duc Tho, Nghi Xuan districts and Hong Linh town, forcing the destruction of 100 pigs. In addition, foot-and-mouth disease occurred in Xuan Hoi commune (Nghi Xuan) also causing 25 buffaloes and cows to be infected.
Not long ago, Ha Tinh suffered from prolonged heavy rains that flooded many livestock areas and barns, polluting the livestock environment and leaving pathogens in the environment. Furthermore, the changing weather and reduced resistance of livestock are creating favorable conditions for disease to invade.
Vaccination is an effective solution to prevent diseases in livestock.
At the end of the year, farmers are focusing on restocking and increasing livestock herds to serve the Lunar New Year market. In order to minimize risks in livestock farming activities at the end of the year, localities are focusing on reviewing the total herd and conducting additional vaccinations on livestock and poultry.
Cam Xuyen district has a large livestock herd of 4,000 buffaloes and cows; over 50,000 pigs; and over 1 million poultry. Avian Influenza is also occurring in the area, so vaccination of livestock and poultry is strictly controlled.
Mr. Phan Thanh Nghi - Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Crops and Livestock in Cam Xuyen district said: "3 communes (Nam Phuc Thang, Cam Quan and Cam Duong) are recording ASF, forcing the destruction of 50 pigs. Although the second vaccination phase of 2023 ended on October 7, 2023 with a fairly high rate of livestock and poultry vaccinated (buffalo and cows reached 79% of the total herd, pigs reached 63% of the total herd and poultry reached 60% of the total herd), to control the spread of the disease, in addition to proactive measures to isolate and suppress the epidemic, the district is directing 22 communes and towns to speed up the progress of additional vaccination. The district strives to "cover" over 80% of the total livestock and poultry herd with vaccines".
As a locality located in an epidemic area with 2 households recording pigs infected with ASF, currently, Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen) is focusing on zoning and controlling the epidemic, while on the other hand, promoting additional vaccination of livestock.
Veterinary force of Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen) vaccinates livestock for livestock farmers.
Mr. Chu Van Hoang - Vice Chairman of Cam Quan Commune People's Committee said: "In the second vaccination period of 2023, a number of livestock and poultry preparing to sell, livestock raised in the forest... have not been vaccinated. Currently, the commune is reviewing the total herd, promoting propaganda and mobilizing people to vaccinate 100% of livestock in the subject".
Duc Tho district currently has 16,000 cattle, 20,000 pigs and 800,000 chickens. In the second vaccination period of 2023, the locality completed vaccination of 80% of cattle, 96% of pigs and 40% of poultry.
Mr. Ha Quang Thang - Deputy Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Crops and Livestock of Duc Tho district informed: "Farmers are tending to restore and increase their herds to serve the market demand for Lunar New Year. However, as of November 25, 2023, in Lam Trung Thuy commune, ASF was recorded in 6 villages, forcing the destruction of 39 pigs of 12 families. To avoid the spread of the disease, causing damage to farmers, localities are mobilizing maximum human resources, conducting vaccinations against foot-and-mouth disease, anthrax on cattle and buffalo herds; vaccines against swine fever, anthrax on pigs; and vaccines against avian influenza".
Specialized sector organizes livestock vaccination in Duc Lang commune (Duc Tho)
It is known that the whole province currently has 400,332 pigs, 169,107 cows, 67,000 buffaloes and more than 10 million poultry. In the second vaccination period of 2023, localities have basically completed vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease on over 70% of the total herd of buffalo and cattle, against anthrax on over 63.3% of the total herd of buffalo and cattle; against swine fever on 80.1% of the total herd of pigs, against anthrax on 79.7% of the total herd of pigs; against avian influenza on 34.5% of the total herd.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam - Deputy Head of the Veterinary Management Department (Ha Tinh Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department), to prevent diseases in livestock herds, localities need to continue to organize reviews, grasp changes in the total herd; closely monitor the situation to detect early and handle diseases promptly. At the same time, urgently review and organize vaccination for unvaccinated and newly imported livestock herds, ensuring vaccination reaches a minimum rate of 80% of the total herd (at the time of vaccination). Localities also need to continue to propagate about the risks, harms and measures to prevent and control diseases; guide livestock farmers to apply biosafety and disease-safe livestock farming measures, proactively prevent diseases; do not hide diseases; do not sell, slaughter, or dispose of diseased or suspected animals...
