According to warnings from meteorological experts, this rain in the North is due to the influence of storm Podul (which has landed in Taiwan - China) combined with the possibility of forming a low pressure area in the South of Truong Sa archipelago.

These morphological combinations will continue to cause prolonged rain in our country in the coming days. The rain will help reduce the heat wave in the North and Central regions, bring water to irrigate farmers' crops, but can also pose the risk of extreme natural disasters such as flooding, flash floods, etc.

This morning, two large hydropower plants in the North of Vietnam are still opening a total of 3 bottom spillway gates (updated to 7am), including Son La Hydropower Plant and Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant. These hydropower plants are releasing water to follow procedures, ensure safety and create capacity to receive floods.

The meteorological agency warns that there will be very heavy rain in the North from now until August 16, with some spots reaching 100mm in 3-4 hours. From Hanoi to Thanh Hoa, there will be very heavy rain on August 16 and 17, with a high possibility of causing flooding in urban areas. From Nghe An to Hue, there will be heavy rain from August 15 to 19, possibly lasting until August 20; while the Mekong Delta and the Southeast are also at risk of heavy rain and strong winds on August 16.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that this rain will occur for many days, over a large area in many regions. Specifically, from the evening of August 15 to August 16, the Northeast region and Thanh Hoa will have moderate rain, heavy rain of 30-70mm, locally very heavy rain of over 170mm. Meanwhile, the Central Highlands and the South will have rain of 30-60mm, locally very heavy rain of over 120mm.

Then, from the night of August 16 to the night of August 18, the Northeast and the area from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri will still have moderate to heavy rain, locally 100-200mm, some places over 300mm.
