Speaking to the press, UNICEF Director for West and Central Africa, Mr. Gilles Fagninou, said that in just the last 3 months of 2023, serious violations against children in these 3 countries in the Central Sahel region increased by more than 70% compared to the previous 3 months.

Most of the cases involve the recruitment and exploitation of children to join armed groups, killing and maiming. Mr. Fagninou called for an end to the increase in violence so that children here can enjoy their basic rights.

The Central Sahel region faces many challenges, including political instability, violence and conflict, food and water shortages, as well as issues related to climate change and the environment.

According to the United Nations report on children and armed conflict published in June 2023, in 2022, 423 children were recorded killed in attacks by groups linked to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network, the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) organization..., mainly in the Sahel region.
