VFV officially speaks out about determining athlete's gender disorder, Dang Thi Hong completely retires from competition

One day after the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV), at noon on September 12, VFV issued a press release on a number of issues that are of particular interest to the public. This includes checking the qualifications of athletes participating in domestic and international tournaments.

What did VFV write?

VFV said: “Official tournaments of VFV and clubs, and participating athletes are all registered in the system of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). Therefore, athletes who are not qualified as determined by FIVB will not be allowed to compete in tournaments in the official competition system of VFV until further decision”.

The above announcement means that at this point, 19-year-old athlete Dang Thi Hong will not be allowed to participate in VFV's domestic tournaments (until further decision is made).

The Vietnam U.21 player at the recent U.21 World Cup was not allowed to continue playing in the fifth match because FIVB concluded that she was not eligible to compete. The Vietnam U.21 team was then deducted 4 points from the match.

In the press release, VFV also emphasized: “The determination of gender identity disorder for athletes to participate in tournaments in the official competition system of Vietnam will be carried out according to specific instructions of FIVB, functional units and conditions to ensure the accuracy of this determination, which will be implemented starting from 2026.

Athletes participating in the SEA Games are tested for qualifications according to the regulations of the SEA Games Organizing Committee and the instructions of the Vietnam Sports Administration.

Thus, the volleyball players of the Vietnamese women's team may be tested for gender before the 33rd SEA Games.

When will VFV hold its 8th term Congress?

VFV said: "Regarding the team work, VFV has done well in training and participated in all international tournaments, the competition results have all met the set targets. Review the training plan, prepare the best conditions for the teams participating in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand, strive to achieve the set goals.

VFV is developing a plan to organize the 8th term Congress in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and is expected to hold the congress in the first quarter of 2026.
