Vietnam pledges to further promote gender equality at UN Women Executive Council

Annual meeting of the UN Women Executive Council.

From June 17-19, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the annual meeting of the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) took place to review and discuss the Annual Report, the implementation of the Strategic Plan for the period 2022-2025 and the draft Strategic Plan for the period 2026-2029 of UN Women.

Speaking at the opening of the session, Ms. Sima Sami Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, emphasized the importance of promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in the context of the world facing many challenges such as inequality, conflict, climate change and increasing gender disparity in financial access.

Ms. Sima Sami Bahous affirmed that she will continue to coordinate with the Executive Council and relevant stakeholders to realize commitments to women and girls globally, including the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and Sustainable Development Goal No. 5.

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that this meeting is an important occasion for member countries and UN Women to evaluate achievements and reaffirm their commitment to action to promote gender equality and women's empowerment.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Nguyen emphasized that UN Women needs to take into account the specific conditions of developing countries, including the need for capacity building, equitable finance and inclusive development.

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, spoke at the meeting.

The representative of Vietnam, as a member of the UN Women Executive Council, made a number of proposals on priorities related to narrowing the digital divide, enhancing women's leadership in the digital economy and artificial intelligence governance; mobilizing sustainable financial resources for gender equality promotion programs, in accordance with the priorities and conditions of each country; promoting women's leadership and substantive participation in all fields.

On this occasion, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen shared some of Vietnam's outstanding achievements in recent years, such as women accounting for 30% of the total number of National Assembly deputies, 28% of business leaders, bringing Vietnam's ranking up from 87th in 2021 to 72nd in 2024 in terms of gender equality index; emphasizing the significance of the adoption of the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security with the support and assistance of UN Women.
